#1 Re: Guns N' Roses » GN'R Nominated for Hall of Fame » 686 weeks ago
One of the key aspects to determine who shows up will of course be who get inducted, which is entirely up to the RRHOF. I'd be shocked if it was anything other than the AFD and UYI lineups, that is Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff, Steven, Matt, and Dizzy will get inducted. I don't follow closely enough to know how that will impact Axl's likelihood of appearing. Personally I'd just like to see Axl show and play a couple songs with the guys. If he wants to go back to the new band afterwards, fine. If he doesn't show to this thing, there is never any hope IMO. The guys are too told to really make anything meaningful work after this.

Don't Damn Me is a top 5 for me as well, along with Locomotive and Estranged, but sometimes I think Axl has purposely not played "Slash" songs with the exception of the AFD classics that have to be played. DDM, Locomotive, Estranged, Coma, Garden of Eden, etc just had too much Slash all over them for Axl's taste IMO.

In response to the discussion about who GNR influenced, part of the lack of recognition is the "grunge mentality" of trying to act punk and not give too much credit to influences. GNR was a huge influence on grunge. They were the bridge between 80's pop metal and grunge. In Kim Neeley's book on Pearl Jam, "5 against 1," she states that Eddie, Cornell, Staley all practically worshipped Axl when GNR first came out. He was a guy who was singing/writing/behaving like they wanted to see a front man. Really there's a lot of comparisons between Axl and the Seattle frontmen. I don't know if because grunge was supposed to be "alternative" and GNR was the biggest band at the time, or Axl's spat with Cobain, but when they eventually got popular none of those guys were going to cite Axl as an influence.

Chris Cornell is amazing. It seems as everybody here has a different sample, but you have to check out Birth Ritual from the Singles soundtract. That and pretty much the whole Badmotorfinger LP is as good as it gets for me. It amazing that his voice has held up (fairly well) after what he was doing on those records.

I'm mixed on this one because at first listen there was just too much going on in the song, but as I tried listening to the individual pieces there is some amazing playing going on. The stuff Ron added with fretless guitar is really cool. I like his solo as well. When its put all-together is still sounds messy to me though. I can't even imagine what it sounds like live.

Bucket's solo to me is not only the highlight of that song, but one of the highlights of the entire album. The Rio version is pretty lame compared to the final record version.
#9 Re: Guns N' Roses » List your top 5 song on Chinese Democracy » 824 weeks ago
What the hell I'll make my first post here. I found this site because I really like the CD album. I'm an old GNR fan but didn't really follow the breakup of the band and would randomly wonder when the disc would come out. When I finally got it, I couldn't believe how much I liked it and like it more with every listen. I never listened to any of the leaks or anything so I can't compare these songs to how they sounded in 2002 or 2006. I just think the album stands up just fine right now. Since I liked the album so much I wanted some more info on what's been going on with Axl and why it took 15 years to make. Somehow I got linked to the Chinese Whispers thread and found this website. I've enjoyed voting in the elimination polls. With that background, here are my top 5 on this disc as they stand right now:
1) There was a Time: The outtro is some of the best stuff GNR has done. Axl's voice sound great here and I've become a huge Buckethead fan.
2) Better: Cool riff, great sounding vocals and two really cool but different solos. Pretty much just a great straight-forward rock song.
3) Chinese Democracy: It doesn't seem like many here like this tune but I find myself looking for this one after a long day at work and cranking the volume for those opening chords. The Buckethead solo is incredible.
4) Prostitute: The song kind or jumps around and I don't really like the intro or the outtro but they are my personal favorite lyrics and the last verse and Buckethead solo following the verse are great.
5) Sorry: Great flow to the song, it doesn't really stray from one steady arrangement like so many of the songs. Cool lyrics.
Shackler's Revenge and Madagascar have been rising for me lately as well. Great all around album.
