Re: The Star Wars Thread *NO SPOILERS ALLOWED!*
Just got back from watching it. And I'm torn. The opening was terribly lame. I honestly thought it was a parody film before the actual feature started. The acting was over the top. It went from Scarry Nazi types in TFA to Dracula meets the three stooges. Kylo and Rey sold the whole thing and brought it home for me. An epic relationship that makes the male female protagonist/antagonist work, the rest was filler, IMO. I'm glad JJ is coming back. It was good but a big letdown.

After thinking on it more, my feeling is Johnson just wrote a shitty script. It looked great, but he had no idea what he was doing. I'm shocked with how idiosyncratic Kennedy has been with this franchise that she would have allowed this to happen. They should have gotten Matt Reeves.
How no one seems to have an issue with Luke's reaction to getting the lightsaber that was so awesomely set up in TFA is absolutely astounding. How could you fuck that up?

Yeah, I mean I enjoyed it a lot to be honest, its a great fun time at the movies.
But the thing that surprised me was how the story really felt disconnected from the previous movie. TFA had given me the real sense of an over arching plan - but TLJ really feels more like they are making it up as they go.
This movie really seemed to kinda keep bits it liked and discard elements it wasn't interested in. Right down to moving the scar on Kylo's face.
I'm really hopeful about Episode 9 though. JJ is back - which I think should provide some consistency.

I wanna watch it again but I do agree with these type sentiments. It was dark, and industrial. I felt that was better than TFA as the was a little too polished & Star Trek reboot-y. However the story didn't go hand in hand with the first installment, felt sorta seperate with little arc from 1-3.
Looking back it almost 'looked' more like a sequel to Rogue One than TFA, and while cool, I don't know if it was a fit without a more fitting story.

This ^^
There were really enjoyable moments. The battle with Snoke's guards was awesome. And I would've enjoyed more of the visual spectacle had I watched it in 3D.
Re: The Star Wars Thread *NO SPOILERS ALLOWED!*
Saw it for the third time today. It's still not the movie I would have made, but I have certainly come to grips with it. I think there are certainly some continuity issues, but the opportunity is there for it to be fixed by the end of the trilogy. I really think we won't be able to judge the movie until we see IX. In JJ I trust...
Re: The Star Wars Thread *NO SPOILERS ALLOWED!*
As a stand alone movie it was superficially entertaining, but as a Star Wars movie I thought it was very poorly written and a disappointment.
The fact that there was never a broad outline for the story of all 3 of these movies shows badly. The lack of continuity and meaningful character development just one example of this.
There are so many annoying points about this film (largely already mentioned so I won't rehash them). But I think Kathleen Kennedy is ruining the whole thing with her feminist and other associated agendas. That's being put ahead of meaningful writing. I think it's great having strong female characters (I want to see strong female role models for my daughter), but who is the strong male role? Poe was reduced to a bumbling pig headed buffoon and Finn, well he kinda was barely in the movie except for the pointless casino side story.
Also the whole Mary Sue thing wth Rey is quite irritating. How she can do what she does without any training in TFA and this essentially carried through into TLJ. It also means there is no real character development left for her.
Don't even get me started on The Force and what can be done with it now. I thought it was questionable when Kylo was able to stop a blaster shot in mid air in TFA. Well shit that looks entirely realistic compared to what is done with it now with little to no training.
Re: The Star Wars Thread *NO SPOILERS ALLOWED!*
Aussie, I’m not picking on you here, because I’ve seen this complaint a lot.
But The Force is an imaginary magical power. We’ve already accepted it as a thing in these movies, but how could we know the limits to this imaginary force?
Re: The Star Wars Thread *NO SPOILERS ALLOWED!*
Yeah that's true, I just feel it was better when there appeared to be some limitations to the force. At the moment the only limitations to it appear to be imagination.
Maybe it's the fact that apparently "amateurs" in regards to experience with the force are able to do such fantastic things with little to no training.
Whilst Leia has obviously been around force users for years and it's in her blood, yet her first use of it is for some superman flying in space. Then Rey effectively defeating Kylo in TFA and other things. It's probably passable that Luke got to the level to be able to have a a teleport battle using the force, but I preferred it when it was at least a little difficult to use. Im sure if Anakin was able to use the current version of the force then he would have been able to save Padme's life, the Emperor wouldn't have had to feed him BS about that the Dark Side giving him those powers.
