I know exactly what you mean man.

Freddie always seemed a tad scared to hit those high notes on Somebody To Love, especially "the big one".

George just went after it at the Freddie Tribute show.

It was THE BEST vocal performance of the night, and despite all the energy with the Axl performances, the George Michael performance I rarely like to admit.... was my favorite.

*ducks*

There was, years ago on MTV, a report about Axl and GM running into one another at some club, then hanging out all night. The MTV news reported the odd couple hangout, and then had brief interviews with them individually about it.  I've looked for the interview on youtube forever and have never found it.

Anyway, he certainly is one of the best voices of my generation and has continued to make awesome music to this day. Back then I thought (naively) that he might actually join Queen and tour with them for a bit. That would have been awesome, but it was little more than a pipe dream on my end.

Yeah, looking back in hindsight George Michael would've been the best option to replace Freddie, had they decided to just keep going.

The thing that makes George unique is that he's a great vocalist, but he's also got alot of stage prescence. Something I don't think Paul Rodgers, or anyone at the tribute show other than Axl had. And Elton can't sing Freddie songs -- other than The Show Must Go On.

QUEEN Drummer Says Tribute Project Protects Band Legacy - Sep. 26, 2011

According to The Pulse Of Radio, Roger Taylor says that the bottom line for him and Brian May launching the talent search for their Queen Extravaganza production is quality control. The pair is prepping a self-produced tribute act to tour next year "playing QUEEN's music combined with unseen footage and a production spectacle" which is completely sanctioned and controlled by the band.

Taylor admitted that there are several reasons for the band to put their energies into the tribute show, but it's mainly to protect the brand name of the group. "Well, that is definitely, I would say, the key aspect. I'm not going to pretend it's the only aspect. I mean, but whether this makes any money or not, I can't tell at this stage. Obviously, I'll be honest — I hope it does — but it's turning into an exciting project now. But it is for that very reason. There were literally hundreds of these tribute bands, and most of them are pretty cheesy, and I just thought it really is diluting whatever we might've had."

QUEEN is urging talented fans "who think they have what it takes to play Brian May's guitar riffs in 'Sheer Heart Attack' or do their best Freddie Mercury vocals on 'Bohemian Rhapsody'" to upload their auditions to www.queenextravaganza.com."

Sounds incredibly stupid.

I can honestly say that other than 'free' and 'in my backyard' is there any way or reason that i'd attend a Queen show that didn't feature at least Brian May & Roger Taylor.

So true. It'd be like going to watcha  Gn'R tribute band with actual Gn'R footage in on the video screen. Fun if it's in a  bar down the street but why would I pay a full ticket price to see it in an arena or some big venue?

It's the goofiest sounding thing. The irony?

Queen ain't the first. Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons were quoted awhile back as throwing the idea around of holding auditions to replace themselves in KISS when they retire, so that KISS would continue to go on as a tribute act, with Paul & Gene raking in the cash, despite just sitting at home.

Who would pay full face value for a KISS show without KISS? Huh?

Agreed

nothing unique.  there is a freddy tribute guy who does the rounds near me who is pretty much spot on
whether he has a YouTube channel to brag about I don't know.

Are you talking about Gary Mullen? He won Stars in Your Eyes on tv years back and launched a career as a Freddie tribute act.

Apparantly since he has been getting professional coaching and he sounds even more like Freddie, this guy sells out venues all across the uk now. I found this link of him on kareoke in a pub, quality lol!

I guess Mick is right. The dude on page 1 compared to this Gary guy is night and day.

Gary is like 9.5/10 right on. About the only part you notice he misses is the high notes. BUT, if you hear Freddie's live performances (of which The Show Must Go On never happened with Freddie live), my guess is Gary's take is pretty close to how Freddie would've performed it live. Freddie had moments were he 'yelled' the high notes live, and never was quite was it was to the studio version.

Gary sounds almost as close as you're gonna get to the real deal in 2011.

Wow, pretty damn close. I don't think I could tell the difference if somebody just played me a live recording and did not tell me.
