Re: Explorer or Mockingbird?
Epiphone Les Paul Studio - Played pretty much like my Epi LP Standard seemed a bit chunkier though for some reason...neck didnt seem as fast and the action on it seemed really high compared to my standard
looked into this more and revisited my own LP. it kinda bothered me that the studio felt so much different than my standard so i needed to look into it in further detail
the Studio's for sure have a different neck profile, the standard is a slim taper and the studio is a standard neck
they have the same pickups but the standards are covered studios are open coil
The Standards have binding around the body top.
Standards have a maple top over mohogany body, studios are just mohogany.
standards have trapezoidal inlays, studios are just dots
Standards have amber Bell shaped tone/volume knobs, studios have black speed knobs
Standards have Grover Tuners....studios MAY NOT
the strap buttons may be better on the standard
Standard has a MSRP of $953 and the Studio has a MSRP of $606 .... whether or not the $350 price difference is justified i guess is up to the individual
Re: Explorer or Mockingbird?
I can't stand Studios. Too many of those differences add up for me.
I've played studios that sound and play better than standards, and vice versa. The quality with these instruments varies so much that you have to try it before you play it if you really want to pick the best one for you.

Re: Explorer or Mockingbird?
^ Agree with that. Some guitars are just better than others - even when you have multiple guitars of the same model and make. Once you start swapping between brands and models as well, it's nearly impossible to tell without having a go what suits you.
Good Example: Slash is the Gibson guy - but isn't his primary guitar that he records the big albums with actually a gibson copy? He just likes the feel of that guitar...even though you'd expect some kind of $10k guitar he'd get from the custom shop these days would be better.
Re: Explorer or Mockingbird?
imo the best acoustic guitar that ive ever played is a Samick that i own...its like my soul mate! lol
but yeah i remember when i bought my Epi LP...i played the standard plus, i played a studio, played the custom, played the ZWCamo bulls eye...i guess the logic would be that the Price would set the best guitar but i liked the ZW guitar the least...jsut didnt feel right to me...also the next highest priced guitar was the ultra, but i didnt care really for that one either...was actually a toss up between the studio and the standard and i went with the standard cuz it had a slightly more meaty sound to it...then last weekend i played that studio and i hated the feel of it, the action the neck everythign just didnt feel right to me...today i played another studio...felt like a dream
also when i played that explorer last weekend it felt perfect to me...i played a diferent explorer today...blah...its weird but epi's each have their own unique feel, my buddy's LP standard feels a bit different than mine as well, mine has a good pound or 2 on his first off. also my neighbour is a fender guy...and he's always telling me about different nuances in different fenders
was thining of checking out a Flying V..but the shape kinda frightens me...oft times i play sitting down and the V just looks like a guitar that you need to stand and play anyone have any experience with the V shaped guitars? my buddy has a BC Rich V that he loves
