Re: BRET MICHAELS Says POISON And MÖTLEY CRÜE Will Join Forces For U.S. To
Jul. 09 - Pelham, AL - Verizon Wireless Music Center *
Tickets start Sat. I got email from crew website to hit presale and a T shirt. But Poison was half the draw and they are not mentioned for my closest show. I understand Vince sounds like shit live from the boots i have watched. I may end up flipping a coin to decide if I will go. I have no clue who NY dolls are.
No clue who the New York Dolls are...
Does this sound familiar?
Or this?
And especially this (dedicated to Johnny Thunders memory from Duff)
The New York Dolls were a MAJOR influence on Guns N' Roses, specifically guitarist Johnny Thunders, who seemed to have direct influence on both Duff McKagan & Tommy Stinson, and most likely Izzy Stradlin, as they seemed to be pretty similar guys in personality. They were glam when people were figuring out what glam was, but with a music format more attributed to punk. Alot of Guns N' Roses early image during their Strip-days can be directly attributed to NY Dolls. They started in '71, released a couple albums (a self-titled debut in '73, and 'Too Much Too Soon' the following year), and by '75 the band fell apart, and after several attempts to rebuild, called it quits.
David Johansen & Sylvain Sylvain are the only surviving members of the original band, and they revived the NY Dolls in 2004, and have released three new albums since with the new band, the latest of which was released earlier this week.
But the original NY Dolls were legends. Not only did they influence GN'R, Crue, Poison, but also KISS, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, among others, as well as countless fanboys within music that admired their work.

Thanx for taking the time JR!
I will admit thats the first time i have heard the top 2 youtubes. I will also admit I never made the connection 2+2 = Johnny thunders was in NY Dolls I have heard the ny doll name and JT name tossed around over the years. I allow them to be my bands band if you can understand that.
I love duffs cover and So Fine. First listen to the originals is a turnoff for me. If I heard it on the radio I would keep surfing. I also mean by my comment that I have no interest in seeing them live. Even thought they inspired GnR great moments.

Hey jamester- thanks for all those great videos! I may agree with you on his being in his prime around 87. I think we're around the same age, and I was hugely into the Crue back then too.
It looks to me like they still put oin a good show, but I'm totally not a fan of Vince's singing anymore. I really don't like how he can't slide from line to line anymore- like you said, he seems to be fighting for breath. Nonetheless, they're still cool and pretty good to their fans.

I enjoy both Duff & Tommy's covers of You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory, but I still think Johnny's original is the best.
As for NY Dolls and Human Being... GNR's cover of it is on a whole 'nother level and far surpasses the original. GNR's Human Being is my favorite song on The Spaghetti Incident.

Ha! Is that the singers legs on the cover?
Glad you like it! I posted with you in mind.
Its to soft for me. The whole glam/drag image(from posters) is a turnoff for me these days too. Good for them tho. It feels authentic for someone (me) lookin in on them for the first time.
Im shure Hundreds of unknown bands would sell there soul and glam out to open for crew/poison.

The difference with the Dolls, is they were pioneers in the field. Anyone who does it today just looks stupid and looks like copycats. The 80's were the time to pay tribute, because they adapted the look and style to their own thing, especially with Poison which were their own thing, yet the Look What The Cat Dragged In album, they all look like girls. Yet in reality throughout the 80's glam scene, they were feminine playing cock rock. It ran it's course then.
Glam today is just goofy imo. Only someone like the Dolls should be doing it.
