I don't think it's sparse. His last two efforts only had a few good songs each, but it's typical.
I haven't seen an artist yet that has masterpieces from top to bottom in their catalog.
Michael has more total 'good' songs versus 'bad' imo, even with only six 'real' albums to his name.
I think his material holds up, and has a vast selection to choose from, especially considering he has only six true albums to pick from material. There's so many classic songs on Off The Wall up through Dangerous, and some underappreciated ones from the later albums.
I just think his history is in fact - 'quality' over 'quanity'. I mean look at the Stones. How many decades of absolute SHIT would you have to sift through, to get to Paint It Black?
The catalog is limited, but is loaded with more classic songs imo, than some artists with 22 albums to their name.
