althletes..especially olympic athletes are supposed to be positive role models and representatives of companies, countries and children..a model citizen if you will
rock stars have always been anti establishment, and a bit on the edge...i dunno you tell me, should a US Olympic Athlete and a Musician have the same habits and reputation?
Listen i have no problems with who does what...go for it, but i'll ask you another thing....how does it feel to have tax payer's dollars going to some kid to fund a drug and drinking habit? especially in a time of economic uncertainty? I dont even live in america (neither does bono) so I for one dont really care, but if a Canadian Athlete gets caught with an illegal substance then i would be of the same opinion...in fact one of our snowboarders got caught with pot a couple years ago and i think he got booted from competition...so wtf gives? I dunno i'm still of the same opinion as Bono here, this kid thinks he can do whatever he wants whenever he wants with who he wants....and the reaction this is getting is just showing that he's right
I dont think he should be thrown in jail or anythign either, but he should be given a bit of a wakeup call...he's representing the USA and he's being funded by the gov't (as well as sponsors) he should be spending their (and your) money a bit more responsibly IMHO

I understand what your saying Neemo but this is where I think your wrong. Have you seen the guy? Seen interviews, he's kindof nerdy.. I don't think he's some rebel swimmer, like that skier was a few years ago for US (Bodie Miller?). He's just some goofy guy who some college kids probably took advantage of & got a picture of him at one of his weaker moments. I don't think he's some mad partier.

yeah, i don't get what you're saying at all. and i said throw him in jail just because i don't know what the law is in the us for drug users or whatever.

he smoked some weed/crack/whatever and now it's all about taxpayers money. that's funny.
he's a kid. that's what you don't get. he's been spending his childhood and teen years in a god damn pool swimming 6-7 hour a day. maybe he wants to experience life a little? i'm not saying it's ok what he did, but turning this into such a big tragedy, come on. he's going to make mistakes and he'll learn from them. he's human. he's bound to go a little off-track sometime during his life. the difference is, when it will happen, the media will be all-over it. but when your average joe does it no one knows.
he's a role model. newsflash, he's a person just like you and me, too. learn to take the good things from your role models and not the bad.
so, if you think it's such a big deal, what do you think they should do to him? ban him from representing the us in international competitions? because i assume that's the problem. he's a us athlete smoking pot. just like a lot of athletes out there, the difference being that he got caught. what do you think the appropriate punishment should be for him?

not exactly sure the substance abuse policy of international swimming....but if it was any of the major professional sports leagues then he woulda been suspended, and international rules are usually more strict....as for me making a big deal out of it....no i'm really not, i could care less, i just think he was fucking stupid for possibly throwing his career away for a couple hours of fun is all....to tell you the truth i dont even care about swimming at all, so this has no impact on me what so ever...i juts hink it was a really bad decision on his part thats all period

I have a far bigger problem with the DUI he got a few years ago. That's when you start putting other people in danger.
Meanwhile, he has been suspended for 3 months from swimming competitions (LOL as if he gives a damn about non-Olympic events) and Kellog has ended his endorsement deal.
