Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.
Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

I don't wanna get into the whole issue on weed. whether it should be legalized or the health effects or whatever. I am going to say Phelps is a dumbass. When you've got the whole world at your finger tips as an athlete you just don't fucking smoke weed. You know what's gonna happen. Is it that important or that cool that you're willing to risk everything you've worked for? Fuck no. Man if I was an athlete with everything goingf or me, money, fame, success I'd quit drinking if it ment not blowing it. Hell I quit anything if it could hurt me in anyway. Be it physically or even just perecption wise. I just don't get these athletes who risk careers and reputations over smoking a fucking joint.

What's truly crazy about it is he probably has around 5 years left to dominate the sport. Go to the 2012 Olympics, do your thing again, and retire. Then you can smoke all the weed in the world at the ripe young age of 27 and do it in private with no repercussions to your career.

I think this is quite funny and I do not hold anything against Phelps. I don't see how you guys can point the finger either, considering you've all smoked weed before too...If it was okay enough for you to do it, it should be okay enough for him to do it...
Don't give that crap about how this is a different circumstance, because it really isn't. It boils down to holding yourself to the same standard that you hold anyone else to, regardless of position or class standing.
