The Dark Knight's butler, British old timer Michael Caine, spilled some massive Batman news to MTV at the Toronto film fest.

He's basically confirmed the rumors that Johnny Depp and Academy Award winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman have been cast in the caped crusader's next film installment:

"I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, '˜Are we going to make another one?' They said yeah. I said, '˜How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says '˜I'll tell you how you top Heath '” Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.' I said, '˜S-t, they've done it again!''

Well, sounds like Penguin is in.  Not excited about that by any means.  Could break the whole film.

I am however excited to see Depp as the Riddler.

If that's true, and I would think Michael Caine is a valuable source, that will be bloody fucking amazing.

TDK was a masterpiece. If this Part 3 is as good as TDK, this might end up being the greatest ACTION franchise ever, totally forgetting the superhero element.

I don't think that's valid. Hoffman was in rumors for Penguin for TDK, and Depp's name is always thrown around. I would actually bet on this being a joke or a red herring on the rampant speculation that the Nolan series has endured for years.

Re: The BATMAN Thread

Great if true, although I've got my doubts, I'm sure Michael Caine would really spill the beans like that, especially as a third films not even been confirmed yet (I imagine that's only a matter of time given TDK's success).

Not sure why so many are against seeing Penguin in the 3rd film, he's a one of the biggest villains in the Batman story and considering Nolans wish to keep the series grounded in reality one of the few villains they could realistically pull off.

What bothers me more is why most superhero films these days need 2 villains at least to keep the film going. TDK worked as it was mainly Joker with the film building to the 'creation' of two face. Two Face as the main villain in film 3 would have worked, obviously that seems unlikely now. Two villains is just a bit overkill, I'd prefer one villain in more depth.

Re: The BATMAN Thread

I like a main villain and a lesser-known, less important one. My dream for the third film would be The Riddler and Deadshot, with Deadshot's role being pretty small. Anytime you use the Riddler though you need someone else because he doesn't do fighting or action and in most interpretations doesn't keep thugs around to help out. There isn't really any fighting in a Riddler-exclusive movie.

I've never liked Penguin. Seemed like a b-list guy to me.

I think the Nolan bros said if they make a third film, a villain that hasn't been seen on the big screen will be chosen.

WB to Re-Release The Dark Knight Jan. 23

Warner Bros. Pictures is bringing The Dark Knight back for a return engagement in theaters and IMAX on January 23, 2009, giving audiences one more chance to see the film on the big screen. The film will re-open nationwide, it was announced today by Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, "'The Dark Knight' is a crowning achievement in every sense of the word. We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen."

One of the most celebrated and successful films of this or any year, The Dark Knight has been hailed by both critics and audiences since its original release last July. The film garnered widespread acclaim for its artistic and technical achievements, including the work of its outstanding cast and its director, Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Memento).

Led by Christian Bale, reprising his role from Batman Begins, and Academy Award® nominee Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain), the ensemble cast also includes Academy Award® winner Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules), Gary Oldman (the "Harry Potter" films), Aaron Eckhart (Thank You for Smoking), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Stranger Than Fiction), and Academy Award® winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby).

In addition, critics and moviegoers alike applauded Nolan's revolutionary use of IMAX cameras to film some of the most challenging action sequences ever created—a first for a major feature film.

Nolan directed The Dark Knight from a screenplay written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan produced the film, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers.

Collaborating with Nolan behind the scenes were two-time Oscar®-nominated director of photography Wally Pfister (The Prestige, Batman Begins), Oscar®-nominated production designer Nathan Crowley (The Prestige), Oscar®-nominated editor Lee Smith (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (Topsy-Turvy). The music is by Oscar® winner and multiple Oscar® nominee Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Gladiator) and seven-time Oscar® nominee James Newton Howard (Michael Clayton, The Fugitive), who previously collaborated on the score for Batman Begins.

Originally released on July 18, 2008, The Dark Knight broke virtually every possible box office record to become the top-grossing film of 2008 and the second-highest grossing movie (domestically) of all time.

Seen it multiple times, am picking up the blu-ray, and will still be seeing it again in theaters. I'm pumped for this re-release.

I'll be picking it up on DVD. I'll pass on the re-release. Saw it back during opening week in the summer.

They're only doing this to try to get some Oscar attention.
