They were probably running a $4.99 sale on it.
Really? Don't want to take this off-topic, but still, that seems weird.
Escape, BTW, is Journey's Appetite.
Don't know if it was this album or Greatest Hits but they didn indeed have a Journey album on sale for 4.99 a few days ago

I already posted in another thread I thought it would do 675 based on Metallica's and AC/DC's numbers, but I admit that's gonna he high. I didn't know how few BB stores there actually are. Oh well, I stuck my foot in it and am not gonna try to sugarcoat it now.

I kinda figured 400K- 650K I think it'll drop off significantly after the first week or two. I don't think it's gonna sustain any real success on the charts.
They'll need either strong word of mouth or a couple of big crossover singles to give it legs. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen. I think that This I Love could be the magic crossover ticket but we'll see if they even release it as a single

London, England (CNS) - Guns N' Roses' much awaited album Chinese Democracy has already been certified platinum in Finland after it sold 50,791 copies in the U.K. on its first day of release, according to midweek sales figures.
Chinese Democracy has topped the general iTunes Music Store chart in Greece, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Finland, Music Week reports. In Finland, a domestic album is given platinum award if it recognizes sales in excess of 30,000 copies, while the same award is given out to foreign artists for shifting 20,000 units of a single album.
In addition to being the numero uno song and number one rock track in most European countries, it's the number 1 rock song in the iTunes Music Stores in the U.S., Canada, France and the U.K.
In the first-week sales estimation in the U.S., the album sold anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 (including a reported 25,000 downloads at iTunes), according to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS.
However, the album will not debut on this week's The Billboard 200 chart, but the following week, December 3.
Re: Predictions: 1st week U.S. sales will be...
My prediction for years has been 500-700K first week
I guess I should've adjusted that slightly for the Best Buy thing but I didn't, but I guess I should change it to 400-500K
I know some people will see this an excuse but it's really just the facts
Best Buy has 1400 stores in the US. Wal-Mart has over 4000 including the Super Centers, not to mention Sam's Club. And Wal-Mart spent a lot more $ advertising Black Ice than Best Buy did CD. Wal-Mart held off until the last week or so but that last week I saw their commercial probably a dozen time during college and NFL football games. I still haven't seen a commercial for CD on TV even once. I expected them to hit us with the full on marketing blitz but it never came
Metallica sold 490,000 in 4 days, but how many stores were they available in? Every single Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target plus every record store int he country. Bottom line is that it was much more widely available
BUT, and this is what I keep saying, GnR didn't sign on with Best Buy to maximize the # of albums sold. They went with Best Buy to maximize profits without having to edit their album. If the album sells below expectations, Best Buy gets hurt a lot worse than UMG or GnR
very good points. i didn't think to factor in the number of Best Buy stores.
AND the fact that Walmart is doing really well - total sales are up which is amazing.
AND the fact that Best Buy is hurting and facing the worst environment they've ever seen.
GnR/Interscope went with Best Buy to maximize profits and get their money up front.
