Guns N' Roses Loses Day One in the UK Chart Battle

The Killers have taken the lead in the competition to top this week’s albums chart, with their Day And Age (Vertigo) outselling Guns N' Roses long-awaited new album Chinese Democracy (Polydor) by around 20,000 copies, in what is likely to be one of the biggest chart battles of the year.

In its first day of sale Day And Age sold 70,764 copies to Chinese Democracy’s 50,791, according to midweek sales figures that see five new entries in the top ten.

(maybe you should learn advertising next time axl)

No offense taken. if you disagree, post what you think is accurate.

my numbers are based on two very recent album releases by bands that are in the same segment of the industry as Gnr.

Black Ice sold 784,000.
Death Magnetic sold 490,000 (in 3 days).

IMO, it doesn't matter how albums "generally" sell these days. those two albums i listed are the right benchmark.

Exactly, and if GNR can't come close to Metallica's 3 DAY number than it SHOULD be viewed as a huge disappointment.

And it will be viewed as such. Should have done the exclusive at Wal-Mart. The album doesn't have a parental advisory so no issue with being edited and this is going to be one of the worst holiday shopping years in a long time due to the economy. Electronics stores like Best Buy are getting hammered right now whereas Wal-Mart has groceries and other necesseties that people will keep coming back to during an economic downturn.

very true

i think best buy promised more promo than wal mart
if that's true gnr made the wrong decision

supposedly axl wasn't willing to get rid of two swear words either

The cussing wasn't an issue. There is no parental advisory warning on the album. There are plenty of albums at Wal-Mart without parental advisory labels that do contain a few curse words. Wal-Mart won't spend the money to edit an album that doesn't receive a P.A. label in the first place.

I'm sticking to my 100-250 thousand prediction. Anything above that will be a pleasant surprise.

The album is being sold on curiosity alone. There isn't a monster single that's causing people to rush out and buy it. Whatever it winds up selling in week one, we're gonna see a pretty steep drop in week two.

Too bad for him it's actually #4 on the U.S. iTunes store. It hasn't been #1 since yesterday evening when Kanye overtook it. And now the Killers and Coldplay have also overtaken it today.

Re: Predictions: 1st week U.S. sales will be...

My prediction for years has been 500-700K first week

I guess I should've adjusted that slightly for the Best Buy thing but I didn't, but I guess I should change it to 400-500K

I know some people will see this an excuse but it's really just the facts

Best Buy has 1400 stores in the US.  Wal-Mart has over 4000 including the Super Centers, not to mention Sam's Club.  And Wal-Mart spent a lot more $ advertising Black Ice than Best Buy did CD.  Wal-Mart held off until the last week or so but that last week I saw their commercial probably a dozen time during college and NFL football games.  I still haven't seen a commercial for CD on TV even once.  I expected them to hit us with the full on marketing blitz but it never came

Metallica sold 490,000 in 4 days, but how many stores were they available in?  Every single Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target plus every record store int he country.  Bottom line is that it was much more widely available

BUT, and this is what I keep saying, GnR didn't sign on with Best Buy to maximize the # of albums sold.  They went with Best Buy to maximize profits without having to edit their album.  If the album sells below expectations, Best Buy gets hurt a lot worse than UMG or GnR

They were probably running a $4.99 sale on it.

Really? Don't want to take this off-topic, but still, that seems weird.

Escape, BTW, is Journey's Appetite.
