HAMPTON, Iowa - A hot air balloon hit a power line and crashed into a farm field Friday, killing two people and injuring a third, a sheriff said.
The balloon was descending when it hit the line. The balloon and the basket separated and the basket fell 60 feet to the ground, Franklin County Sheriff Larry Richtsmeier said.
The crash occurred about 9:15 a.m., he said.
Two passengers died at the scene. The third person was flown by helicopter to a hospital. That person's condition wasn't immediately known, and the victim's names were not released.
Hampton is located in north-central Iowa.

Ouch. I wonder how one of them managed to survive the fall.
I'm actually surprised only one survived. While it would certainly hurt and break some bones, a 60 foot fall shouldn't kill you. I guess it depends on how you land.
And this is why you'll never see me in a hot air balloon.
If I had to choose, I would rather drop 60 feet from a balloon than thousands of feet from a flying coffin.
