Two schoolgirls blinded in acid attack in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Two men on a motorcycle used water pistols to spray acid on girls walking to school Wednesday in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, blinding at least two of them, military spokesmen said.

U.S. Col. Greg Julian said Afghanistan's National Military Command Center told him that four girls were hurt in the incident. Two were blinded and remain hospitalized, and two were treated and released, he said.

The men escaped after the attack, and no one claimed responsibility for it, but Arab-language network Al-Jazeera said Taliban militants were suspected to be responsible.

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. near Mirwais Nika Girls High School in the Meir Weis Mena district.

Kandahar government spokesman Parwaz Ayoubi gave different figures on the number of girls injured, saying six were burned, one of them severely. He called the attackers "enemies of education."

Girls were forbidden to attend school under the Taliban, which ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, when U.S.-led forces removed them from power.

According to Al-Jazeera, the girls were attacked with battery acid. Two teenage sisters, one of whom suffered serious burns, were among the victims.

"We were on the way to school when two men on motorbikes stopped next to us. One of them threw acid on my sister's face. I tried to help her, and then they threw acid on me, too," Latefa, 16, told the Qatar-based satellite network.

"We were shouting, and people came to see what was going on. Then the two men escaped," she said.

Latefa told Al-Jazeera that she was hurt, and her 18-year-old sister was in serious condition with acid burns on her face.

Al-Jazeera said schoolgirls in Kandahar can be recognized by their uniform of black pants, white shirt, black coat and head scarf.

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan condemned the incident, as well as a suicide bombing that occurred near a government building hours later that killed and wounded several civilians, including women and children.

"These cowardly acts reflect how dishonorable the insurgents truly are," Gen. David McKiernan said in a statement posted on the Web site of the International Security Assistance Force.

"No one can honestly say they are fighting for the people, then purposefully attack innocent women and children," he said.

Classic conditioning.

What else is there then to gather from this article, than that terrorism is a terrible, monstrous, global evil and we need wars to fight it. And you better pay or else they're coming for you too. Never trust a bearded man on a bike! If a politician wants your money to fight these animal muslims you better say yes! How can you not? For there is no gray area, you have to choose, citizen.

Or should you say, if the story is even true, these are just two fucked up individuals encouraged by a lawless, chaotic environment? Not worth in any way worldwide news coverage. At least not more than the usual crack home incident.

This article and it likes are a crime against humanity. Sure, I'll go that far. A bullshit story validated by the association of the all mighty world news network. A clever manipulation of reality. A distortion designed to deceive. The media of today holds an enormous sway on the people, and this kind of conduct is criminal and ultimately leads to conflict and war.

So its not even remotely possible that this attack was done by former members of the Taliban who freely admit they dont have alot of regard for women?

Remotely, sure. But does that justify a news story with an angle?

The article says it itself "Got away, we don't know who it is, nobody has taken responsibility, loose rumors say terrorists did it". For all we know some bomb victim got paid 20 bucks to make up a story.

This is not news, it's spin propaganda. Cause as I said, even if it were absolutely true, who gives a shit? Unless it's on the terrorist manifest or representing a trend, what justifies this making the cut in a limited news coverage? I'm pretty sure there's a lot more relevant issues going on than this.

Need I mention the nutcase Christian that slaughtered those school girls? He had women issues too, and so does Christianity. Doesn't mean wnat I to connect them.

How about calling it what it is, and recognizing the effects? Who did it or how nature made it happen is immaterial. You telling me as a news man you consider this a solid, factual article with any positive relevance to the public interest?

Or is it a fluff piece meant to make a buck, advised by the marketing division, which also work on the level of propaganda?

Ease up Polluxlm, it's just a small story. It isn't the breaking story on CNN or some new neo-con reason to keep at war with Iraq or a War on Terror. It was just a small little story Tommie probably came across & found it disgusting & posted it. The FLA shooting probably deserves a thread as well. And there've been alot of wierd child-death stories that have come out from down South. Sometimes, people choose to post them. Speaking of which, whatever happened to that one aabout a little kid or two of them found dead in a really remote small town? Anyone remember that one?? James would, I know he was posting in that one.

It's not the story per se. It just made me think about the current environment in the media, how dishonorable and commercialized it has become, and how damaging that is to society.

Appreciate the effort at least. 16

I don't think there is any need to condition people to want the war on terror to continue. People have a very weird view of the media. I am in it, and, yes, we are out to make money. If we don't, we don't survive. There is no agenda. I can write whatever I damn well please in my newspaper, within certain tastful restrictions. No one tells us what to do.

The biggest farce any government official has crammed down the throats of the American people is the liberal media. It's not liberal. It's conservative. Big time. Because old white guys run it.

While polluxlm makes some interesting points, it is sad to say that this sort of thing really is happening, and in many parts of the world people are being repressed in horrendous ways, such as this story, which disgusts me utterly.

Whether we are doing the right thing to combat it is another story.
