Re: Did you buy Chinese Democracy single on Itunes?
Did you really expect this to go down without a hitch?
haha! Fair point! It's just for me as a fan of the band, it's a shame to see them screw up the international release (at least in Australia).
The situation is this - we have no best buy over here - suposedly CD will hit our regular record stores in 12 days (according to the 22nd Nov date given online by the store) - yet I walk into the pysical store - and there's no posters or info on it - you go to the hard rock section and there's a poster up for Death Magnetic that says "pre-order now for September 9th" and some posters up for a Megadeth greatest hits and a couple of other thrash bands I forget the name of. Australia has a decent fan following of GNR, I mean there's tributes bands that make an ok living belting out AFD in pubs, i'm sure if they put up a little sign like they've done with metallica or Ac/Dc then people would order it. So then I ask at the counter - and the guys just laugh at me and tell me its all rumour and speculation and it won't happen...he follows it down with "If i had a dollar for every time a joker had asked me for chinese democracy in the last 3 years" You can tell them about the Best Buy in the USA, and he just makes a joke about Dr Pepper and maintains that none of it will happen. So you point him to the aussie radio site with it on but he still doesn't believe. Maybe this guy is just a muppet..but it should be undeniable...like there should be a poster up...
Then i come on here and people are pre-ordering and getting the single free. Or buying it on itunes. But aussie itunes doesn't have it. Napster doesn't sell to skum like us. WTF?!!
I mean I don't want the world to end. it's just an album. And like ok - maybe the disbelif from the stores and all that is deserved from the years of waiting or whatever - but at the end of the day - all bullshit aside - GNR is a big brand - not as big as it was in 1991 maybe - but it's still a known name based on the historical importance of stuff like SCOM and that kind of thing. There's a reason these songs get into GH and that kind of thing. OR they're mentioned in guitar mags to this day and stuff. People remember GNR from back in the day, and while it may not destroy the world, there's definately a fan base - both hard core like us, and more causal rock listeners who would have some interest in a GNR record if only they knew it was going to happen.
Anyway...it's great that it's finally happening in the usa, but here in australia it seems like it's going to "just appear on the shelf" like Axl said wouldn't happen. And while australia is a tiny insignificant place in world market terms - it makes me wonder how many other international markets are being wasted.
I don't mean to be negative. I just think this is a good album, GNR is a famous brand name, and the general situation over here is not worthy of what an equivilant band would be doing, and that's a shame for everyone - fans, axl, record company and the like.

Re: Did you buy Chinese Democracy single on Itunes?
That was a good post Monkeychow, I have felt the same way about the lack of promotion here in Oz. I am still yet to even hear the song on the radio (not that I listen to commercial radio a lot). But I haven't heard or seen squat about CD coming out anyhwere else either.
As you say if this is symptomatic of what is happening in a lot of countries around the world then I think it's piss poor and will have an impact on sales (or lack thereof).
Looks to me like Azoff is simply clearing the decks of the album and doing very little to promote it. A cynic would suggest that this strategy guarantees the album has the lowest chance of making a big impact compared to a much larger marketing campagin.
Therefore by guaranteeing a medicore response to this album it helps him to firm up the money move - reunion. Not that CD will be a commercial failure but if it doesn't "shoot the lights out" it really forces Axl's hand to a certain extent. Besides, where does Azoff make the big dollars? Not from the CD release but presumably from touring. But how much $$'s do you think he can make from a third CD World Tour with likely a third "different" lineup for such an event.
Azoff ain't here to help Axl out of his predicament, or earn small change on another CD tour - he is here for a major payday.
Sorry I don't want to drag this thread off track nor want to start bashing NewGNR (personally I think it's the wrong time for a reunion and would like to see CD released properly with a decent campaign behind it). It's just that the longer this half assed release campagin goes with CD being treated like the red headed step child (no pun intended) the more everything points to another bigger game being played out.
Re: Did you buy Chinese Democracy single on Itunes?

Don't feel ashamed. What you're using right now, is what we call - the brain.
It's simple logic.
Irving Azoff would not be here for this half-assed CD release. There HAS to be a silver lining. The dude has a line out his front door, and last time I checked, GN'R, especially new GN'R, wasn't exactly a "News at 5" type of client.

Re: Did you buy Chinese Democracy single on Itunes?
Finally the album is up for pre-order on itunes in oz! Now i just have to talk my physical store around LOL
Does the usa site have a blurb about the band on it. I'd be interested to know if it says the same thing. Anyway its interesting it mentions the line up Minus Bucket and Brain...so seems they're actually promoting the new guys.
