I think there's too much "Guns N' Roses" all over it. It's overkill. Simpler is better.
I think that cover would be awesome if they totally dropped "Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy", and it was just the bare pic, with the spray paint Guns N' Roses on the top-left, and the new small GnR logo at the bottom right.
While I see your point, and probably would have liked it better the way you describe (it's how I always imagined it, but w/o the logo), this album also has become so big, it might as well arrive with all of the pomp and circumstance. No need to be quiet about it now! As if to say, " -->THIS IS CHINESE DEMOCRACY!<-- You've only waited forever! Here it is!!"
Great find, this is the first place that I saw this posted! I think it looks pretty cool and yeah, it was a photo that someone sent to Axl and talked about this in August of 2002 in Hong Kong.

The title goes back to September '99, at least.
"[Doug Goldstein] verifies that the new GN'R studio album, due out sometime next year, will be called Chinese Democracy. He adds that the title has been a done deal for at least six weeks." (Allstarmag, 11/09/99)
Dizzy's tech took the picture before the '02 shows, I think.
My point being, the image might've inspired Axl to dub the album 'CD', or it would've just hit a chord with him after the title'd been decided upon.

Once more, it wasn't Axl. It was Dizzy's tech, who took the picture... Not sure which came first, though, the title or the image.

The cover does include the new gnr logo at the bottom. The back cover with song titles is very similar to the one I created with the addition of a border. Oh yeah, The red star is on the back cover of the booklet, and is held up by a hand. It is by Chinese artist Shi Liteng. The book itself is 23 pages with photography by george chin. There's also an abstract painting by Sasha Volkova inside.

Interesting to mention Sasha Volkova (who publicly appeared with Axl in '06-07), as their relationship of whatever nature has apparently ran its course and it's not really Ax to cater the wishes of the people he's broken up with. Unless it's one of those 'grand gestures of apologizing' which Slash's mentioned.
