and I work in the oil and gas industry. I figured it would be fairly insulated from this mess but it's not. My former company relies on contracts from large companies in the industry. Well, those companies are losing their asses right now on the stock market. It is the end of the fiscal year, so it is a slow time anyway, but it seems my company grew too quickly and now there's not enough work to go around.

Wow. Hopefully this will not have much of a negative effect. Should immediately sign up on unemployment before the money runs out.

EVERYONE in this country is going to feel the pain from this severe recession/possible depression. Whether its a lost job, lower wages, higher costs for food, gas, etc. Its just started.

The good news is, they paid me through next week. Plus I had not put 3 expense checks in the bank and a paycheck as well from a week ago. So I put around $4100 in the bank today. The really shitty thing is I just bought a car in September and signed a new lease with my apartment literally last week (my current lease ends in October). My parents are telling me I should try to get out of it if I can and move back to Houston. My aunt, who works in the medical field, mentioned that X-Ray technicians make pretty good money and the classes only last like a year to 18 months. I might look into that. At the moment I am applying at Best Buy although I am also applying at other oil and gas companies in the Midland area.

Best Buy has a thing asking, "How much do you expect to make per hour?" Well shit. I was making $20 per hour with my former company. What do you guys think I should put in there? I don't want to look like an arrogant prick by demanding something they clearly won't pay me, but I also don't want to lowball myself from whatever they usually pay their people.

Sorry to hear that Tejas, I wish you the best. I was laid off in May 04 & it sucks!! But, everything happens for a reason. While out of work, for me, in the end it worked out great, I got a job I really am glad to have (for now, we'lll see how much longer it lasts). DEFINITELY sign up for unemployment. It pays around 60% of your previous salary, but doesn't take out taxes etc, plus you don't pay for gas to goto work, so it balances out. Only problem is insurance, try getting some cheapo shit with like a $1000 deductible or somethi ng. As for Best Buy, I'd guess they max would pay about $10 hour (aside from mgrs & asst mgrs etc). Ask Russtcb, he works in retail & should know, I think he worked for them a few years ago. Definitely plan your life out (X ray techs etc) if that's what you want to do, or at least healthcare, consider it. Is there an Ikea near you, after a few months of being out of work & searching hard (it's harder than you think) I took a job there. It was a great place to work, for me at least even though it was only temporary.  Get some time for yourself, that's what you pay unemployment for in your paycheck every week. Sucks about the apt & car, see if the apt will let you myb get out in 2-3 months. It may suck, some days you may not want to get out of bed, just keep your head up. Go join the library & get some books too, both career books & fiction to start reading. Helped me out alot.

Good luck dude. When I learned my wife was pregnant in 02, I got laid off the SAME WEEK! It sucked, but I got through it. It's gonna be tough, no doubt about it, especially in this economy, but don't quit.

And like James said, sign up for unemployment, ASAP tomorrow! I did when I lost my job, and it helps more than you might think. They pay a certain percentage of your previous pay, and you were making good coin, so you'll be in fairly good shape.

I'll be sending positive thoughts your way.

I don't get hoe people can blame this on the free market.  In my eyes, this is due to corruption of people.  The free market itself isn't to blame.  (and we arguablly do not have a free market).

Sorry to hear about your job loss.  Depending on what state you are in, the Best Buy rates chance.  I would say anywhere from 9-12 per hour.  Definently not what you were making before though.

Unemployment will certainly help.

Saikin, you're usually pretty good, but that statement wasn't a highlight of yours. Blaming the corrupt individuals of the world is the same thing as blaming the free market. Regulation is put in place because you can't trust people, because they are all selfish greedy and corrupt.

The free market is the way our idea of an ideal economy operates.  With a free market, everything is in equilibrium and there is no room for government regulation.

What the banks did was moved away from that equilibrium in concern to loans.  They gave the loans to people who wouldn't have been able to get them. The banks also didn't have the right 'supply' of the loans.  They were giving more than was at equilibrium.  People were also acting outside of their individual demand curves.  This results in a dead weight loss and is not the fault of the free market.

Corrupt people are not the same thing as a free market.  What people are doing is blaming a tool.  It wasn't the tool that broke, it was the people who misused it.  Those people deserve to be put on trail for what they've done.
