Re: M.I.A. Breaks "Retirement" for Diesel Party

It's looking like M.I.A. pulled a Jay-Z with her retirement talk earlier this summer, as clothing company Diesel has announced a few of the musical acts playing a big party it's throwing, and she is among them. Let this be a lesson to musicians and journalists alike: "I just have to stop for a second" ≠ "I quit music."

The party Ms. Arulpragasam will play is called "Diesel xXx." Seriously. In addition to M.I.A., Hot Chip and N.E.R.D. are confirmed to perform at the "Rock and Roll Circus"-themed New York City stop of the party, which takes place on Pier 3 at the Brooklyn waterfront.

The New York City event is the finale of Diesel xXx, an international affair on October 11 beginning in Tokyo and successively passing the party torch to Beijing, Dubai, Athens, Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Oslo, Helsinki, London, and São Paulo before ending in NYC.

Whew! Sounds like the kind of intense juggling job only the Pacifier could handle.

Other artists playing various Diesel xXx events around the world include Patrick Wolf, Lindstrom, Soulwax/2Manydjs, New Young Pony Club, the Cool Kids, Uffie, Pedro Winter, Mark Ronson, the View, Mr. Oizo, Mystery Jets, Kleerup, Booka Shade, A-Trak, Bonde do Role, the Teenagers, These New Puritans, Lethal Bizzle, and, why not, Chaka Khan and Earth Wind and Fire.

VERY interesting. Looking forward to it as well. Will most likely be on her next album. Funny how she went from retirement and not caring about music to basically quickly getting a record ready for release next year and playing a huge role in Rye Rye's first album.

Sucks that she's pregnant. That means no touring for probably another year or two, if at all.

FUCK.

Its hard to retire from something you feel so passionately about I guess (unless your Axl of course 16) So its good to have her back doing something.

Paper Planes has really taken off (doh, sorry) here in the UK, its always on the radio to rave reviews, its a little different to the album version, not a lot, but having been used to the Kala version I think the new one just takes away from it a little. Good to have it finally getting recognised over here properly. At the end of the summer though of course. Well done record label....

There's a trillion remixes of Paper Planes. Some done by her, her friends, other artists, and a bunch of fan mixes. I ignore all of them and only listen to the original track.

Hell, Jay-Z recently did a Boyz remix. Even has added verses by M.I.A. Not interested.

Its funny how the song exploded a year after release. Shows that even in these dire times for artists and sales, you have a shot at a major hit even if it doesn't happen right after release.

Yeah, 'Paper Planes' is starting to become massive here in the UK.  First major hit for her here, I believe.  Was number 10 in the Q chart a couple of weeks ago - and the first time she has been on a, IMHO, really good channel.

Top video too.  Very catchy chorus.

M.I.A. 'breaking' the country where she is based (I believe?) will obviously be an important step for her.  I personally think she will seize her moment; although the commercial 'promo' may now be already there for her anyway.

She's had a hit now.  Artists who have hits get remembered, certainly over here.  (Iglu & Hartly will be, for instance, due to a strong breakthrough single, if nothing else.)

That movie played a huge role in the increase in album sales. It wasn't on the soundtrack, so if anyone wanted it(non free downloaders that is), you had to either buy Kala, The Homeland Security Remixes(just the Paper Planes single with remixes), or buy the track on Itunes.

For a few weeks, the track was number 2 on Itunes. Rihanna prevented her from getting the number one spot.
