Hmm, seems to be lots of Kill 'Em All references in songs i've heard so far. That was just your life has a verse riff in it like Jump In The Fire. The End of The Line has a riff that reminds me of No Remorse and the vocals in the verse reminded me of the bridge in the Four Horsemen.

I like what I've heard so far tho.

I think the guitars on the album are a little thin. The tone is great, but it sounds like they dialed back the gain so they could double track the guitars..... then forgot to double track them.

Listened to the album a few times today. Pretty average with a few decent tracks. If Metallica and its fans would stop trying to market this shit as Slayer, And Justice For All,etc. maybe you could enjoy it for what it is...a simple hard rock record. Instead you're forced to think its gonna split the atom and of course it never does. Its why I avoid most Metallica sites(or anything Metallica) like the plague.

I've heard better Metallica, but I've also heard worse. I'd probably place it near the middle of their discography quality wise, although need to hear it more before actually compiling a best to worst list.

While listening to most of this stuff(especially the first track) I'm reminded of Blackened. I'd rather just listen to Blackened. Broke, Beat, & Scarred sounds like a C grade Shortest Straw. The Day That Never Comes cant decide whether it wants to be One or The Unforgiven. Unforgiven III has a great intro, but once Hetfield starts singing, I stop caring. My Apocalypse wants to be And Justice For All. Sorry, but it isn't and it can't be. Why try?

Also, these songs aren't good enough to be so long. Trim the fat on these tracks and it probably would have been more listenable

Grade: C-, and I'm being kind.

This album reminds me why I started drifting from rock/metal a few years back. They bring nothing new to the table. Hell I can handle not getting something new, but at least give us a fresh take on things.

Metallica fans are quite possibly the dumbest fans ever of any band. Metallica tried to be a multi-layered, multi-talented band, and all their fans wanted them to be is metal's AC/DC. Every album should've sounded like Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets over and over and over. It's just lame. The Black Album is probably their best album ever, and yet no one wants to give it credit because it wasn't Puppets II.

ANYWAYS, from what i've heard this album is better than St. Anger, definitely. But I still think it's an average output in comparison to all of their previous albums, Load & Reload included.

I kinda take offense to that, being in that I am a Metallica fan.
I'd argue that it was closed-minded metal heads that have been asking for a Master of Puppets II all this time, because I (a pretty big Metallica fan) like the fact that Metallica have gone places musically that THEY wanted to, not what the typical metal head wanted.

I still haven't heard all of Death Magnetic, as I'm waiting until it's officially released so I can hear it in good CD quality, but what I have heard sounds pretty kick ass. Nothing groundbreaking or anything, but still pretty damn good.
I think someone summed Death Magnetic up best as a mix of all Metallica styles - their 80's thrash with the 90's bluesier/more commercial stuff.

I like your honest review of the album too James.
I guess it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea.

The German-language television network 3SAT recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield about the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", the "Some Kind of Monster" movie and the use of METALLICA's music to torture Guantanamo Bay, Cuba prisoners. "Part of me is proud is because they chose METALLICA," Hetfield said about the reports that the band's song "Enter Sandman" was used during the interrogation of Mohammed al-Qahtani '” known as the 20th hijacker on Sept. 11 '” and that listening to the track brought al-Qahtani to tears "because he thought he was hearing the sound of Satan." James added, "It's strong; it's music that's powerful. It represents something that they don't like '” maybe freedom, aggression'¦ I don't know'¦ freedom of speech. And then part of me is kind of bummed about it that people worry about us being attached to some political statement because of that. We've got nothing to do with this and we're trying to be as apolitical as possible, 'cause I think politics and music, at least for us, don't mix. It separates people, [and] we wanna bring people together. So, so be it. I can't say 'Stop.' I can't say 'Do it.' It is just a thing '” it's not good or bad."
