There are many names that immediately come to mind when the subject of horror icons is mentioned.  Names like Dracula, Frankenstein, Leatherface, and Pinhead are quickly conjoured up.

However during the past 30 years three names have risen to the top and have proven they are the leaders due to their neverending popularity, often they are referred to as the "Big Three", they are:

Michael Myers
Freddy Krueger
Jason Voorhees

Who of these "Big Three" do you consider to be the biggest horror icon?

Jason wins by a light year. Was a HUGE part of 80's pop culture, and there's not one person back then who didn't watch those films. Freddy would be second, but people starting getting tired of his act a few sequels in. Myers wasn't nearly as established as the other two because of the length of time between films.

Nothing to be sorry for, I prefer Michael (more box office success too) BUT Jason is definitely a huge name to be reckoned with in the horror dominance of the past 30 years.  Either of these three could easily win in my opinion.  Hopefully the next Jason will be solid.  Like to see another good installment of Halloween and Nightmare as well!

I'd argue Friday the 13th was always strictly American pop mythology, and never got as much wind outside that market. What hampers the notably better European run of Michael Myers is the fact that Halloween has worn out its past significance in the local calendar, thus giving up some of the impact and lore. Still, the Shatner mask makes a lasting impression and he's the archetype in the illustrations of a psycho-killer in a many horror film study I've seen as of late. The Nick Castle Myers' got finesse, making the Voorhees character look like a doorman who'd wandered out of some bachelor party. In comparison, Jason's very crude and blue collarish; the makeshift murderer instead of the blank spot in the human psyche - then again, as far as appearances are concerned, by Halloween 4 I failed to notice any major difference.

As for Freddy, dreams are universal and whom amongst us aren't occasionally startled by a vivid nightmare? That makes him a frontrunner but what harms him, however, is that they never manage to make Krugerman live up to his potential (or shall we say, expectations). What we're dealing with here is the monster who preys on ones deepest, most disturbed fears and phobias - with teenagers, he should be all over their blooming sexuality. Tongue in the phone doesn't quite cut it, while a valiant effort it may be. Then again, we got the Channard Cenobite luring the 17-year old Imogen Boorman with cocks for limbs in Hellraiser II, which puts that into perspective - particularly when coming from otherwise oh-so-correct Brits.

I'll go with Alien.

As far as icons go, I'd say Freddy.  Not saying they're the better films or anything but Just about everybody in the world knows who Freddy is, even if they've never seen a horror film.  I know that I can't say the same for Michael or Jason.

I voted for Michael just to "show da luv". Because he's my favorite.

But in all honesty, even though they are 'slasher' films, the 'hockey-masked killer in the woods' that's an obvious lift from F13 is such an identified image of modern horror films that I would have to say Jason is the biggest icon.

I'd go with OG Myers as my definate favorite, but as far as icon status is concerned, Jason's got that on lockdown. For pop culture relevance alone, and even though the Shape is really the daddy of them all, I've got to go against my heart and vote Jason.
