Re: L.A. CONFIDENTIAL TOPS BEST LOS ANGELES MOVIES
I used to really, really dig the film.
Then I made the mistake of reading James Ellroy's original novel, which blew away a good chunk of respect I had for the film adaptation's narrative. What had originally seemed to me as wonderfully fluent and seamless mystery now appeared as a distilled and heavily chopped down version of the original storyline.
For instance, the character of Inez Soto (the rape victim Bud White saves) was a central figure in the novel, while in the film she's practically forgotten after being discovered. Also, the 'Rollo Tomasi' plot device never appears in the novel, making it a rather brilliant inclusion by the screenwriters on its own right, but also a necessity to tie up loose ends and make the story run faster.
Don't get me wrong, the one major gripe I developed for the film after reading the novel was that I wanted to see the whole thing as a miniseries or something; they nailed the LA looks and had a stellar cast - I would've killed to see them do the entire storyline.

I loved LA Con and I'm all sorts of excited that it's coming out on Blu-Ray in a few weeks.

Never watched L.A. Confidential.
Read any Ellroy?
I remember you've been into true-crime. Ellroy's Black Dahlia, the fictionalized account of the Elizabeth Short case, is nothing but amazing. The film is equally terrifying as the novel is harrowing, albeit for completely different reasons.

Swingers should be on there as well.
As for LA Confidential, I rented that on VHS years ago on a horribly rainy night. I come home, pop it in, and the audio on the tape was all messed up, made it almost unwatchable. I should have turned it off but sat thru it. Totally ruined the movie for me.
