This song is pretty good. Having said that, they are trying too hard to please old school fans. This song is like a Black album reject with a few Justice themed time changes thrown in.

They're not stepping out of their comfort zone or really trying to do anything new. Its a safe return to what got them where they are now.

Re: METALLICA Discussion

I don't think they're trying too hard with this, but what I do think is that the arrangement of it is a bit off at some places during the fast part.

At the same time, it's probably the best they could have possibly done with what was there.

It'll be very interesting to hear the final thing on September 12th.

Funny you should say that. I played it for my little brother the other night and the first thing he said was "I think they're trying too hard". After a day or so of being in love with the track, I'm starting to back off it a bit and I think that's why, it's not as genuine as I'd like. Does that make sense?

I'm with you on that.

I feel it kinda reeks of desperation. On the last one they tried something different, didn't work. Now they're attempting to 'go back'. That doesn't work either since it's not really them anymore. There are some cool riffs, ideas. But it doesn't go past that.

Contrived is perhaps the most fitting description for this song.

I will never understand people and Metallica. After St. Anger everyone wanted Master of Puppets part 2 and now they go back to their roots and people are saying it sounds forced? I don't get that feeling at all. It's a step in the right direction and the song kicks some ass. I wouldn't judge the album on this one song since it most likely is the ballad type song on the album because it is the 4th track and those we always the slower type songs.

Agreed.  I think they took the advice of fans too literally.  They are trying way to hard to go back to where they were those many years ago, and there's no way it's going to work because it's not who they are anymore.

Does anyone else think Jame's voice sounds weak on this one?

Re: METALLICA Discussion

I think its funny that after all the furore of no solos in St Anger...the first single off Death Magnetic begins with a solo.

The song is good but it feels like they have tried to put everything from their history into one song at the expense of coherence. The first solo reminds me of Sanitarium, verse guitar sounds like Unforgiven, vocals are like Load/Reload, the light verse/heavy chorus reminds me of all the track 4s on the classic Metallica albums; this is also track 4. The sudden jump to double speed using drums is like various classic Metallica songs (Seek And Destroy, One) even the riff at that point is similiar to One, the double-guitar line and shred solo; all the elements of Classic Metallica are there. But each individual part is not great; I dunno, maybe it will grow on me like a lot of old Metallica songs. Its ok guess.

Incidentally, the fact that a ballad is track 4 like a lot of classic metallica albums, suggests that this album may have a similiar structure, albeit with more songs.
