It's not a smear campaign. The authorities are doing their job, it just happens to be something they can get publicity with.
It works both ways.
They might be doing it for publicity, but Ledger was very depressed and in a very dark place, and instead as a friend, getting him the help he needed, if depression was a gun - Mary Kate gave him the bullets, and she is responsible for his death, even if it was accidental.
Just because I hit and kill a kid with my car accidentally... doesn't mean I don't face charges.
This is retarded. Heath Ledger had a drug problem and overdosed. Period. End of statement. Don't go blaming Mary Kate Olsen for it. People OD every day on drugs, the Feds never get involved & go after the drug dealer. Besides, Oxycontin is a prescription drug, as were the many found in Ledgers apartment, how about going after the doctors who prescribe it to them, and revoke their practice. You said it yourself, she gave him the bullets. She didn't give him the gun, she didn't pull the trigger, she didn't give him the idea about killing himself, he came up with that on his own. Kurt Cobain & Layne Staley were in "deep dark places" also but nobody ever said to go after their dealers for manslaughter...
If you went to a bar with Mary Kate Olsen and on the way home drove drunk & killed somebody, who should be at fault?? The bar? Mary Kate? Or you!!

If she was in the car with me, drunk...
But she would also have a hand in it, because she was a passenger in car being driven by someone she KNEW was drunk and a risk to public safety.
I'd be guilty of manslaughter, but she should also be guilty on some lesser degree.
Mary Kate would not be asking for immunity if she doesn't feel her statement will incriminate herself or someone she knows. If she has a legit prescription for Oxycontin and she gave him some, and he OD'ed, she's in trouble. ALOT of trouble. If she got the Oxycontin illegally, and gave him some, then she's gonna have to roll over on someone, and it might be someone close to her.
How about we go after the doctors? You know I get so sick and fuckin' tired of hearing this, doctors don't make patients ABUSE medication. Granted doctors do mis-prescribe, but seriously, now who's passing the buck on to someone else instead of taking responsibility?
The doc didn't make you take a fist full of Hydracodone - YOU did. And guess who they punish? Good patients who desperately need pain med's, but can't get them, because I might become addicted and turn around and SUE them.
I PRAY that I can get Elvis doctor one day. Boy will it be a glorious day. Legal drugs by the fist full, and you know what - I won't take it for granted. You've got a great supplier why narc him out? 
Dude, the Feds and/or DEA might not look into this stuff everyday. But the authorites do. I had a friend that shared his score with a buddy of his. The buddy OD'ed, and the cops investigated it. They wanted the dealer, or him, either way they were making someone responsible.
That's their job. Whether you like it or not, or I like it or not, that's what they do.
And just because Mary Kate Olson, is Mary Kate Olson and has more money than God, doesn't mean she should be treated any different. I've had friends & family go to prison... PRISON over things like DUI's, and yet these celebs just get a couple days in the Mayberry jail for it like Otis the drunk. Slaps on the wrist.

Fuck it. He's dead. My life didn't change, & it won't if Mary Kate does or doesn't goto prison for "manslaughter" 
She can OD tonight off a massive pile of coke for all I care. Or get clean in rehab. My life's the same. Quit worrying about them just because their celebrities.
And as for 'passing the buck' to doctors, well that's their job & responsibility to NOT liberally hand out prescriptions left & right. Hence, they are behind the counter drugs. A higher authority is dedicated by the gov't to distribute to those with a valid need for it. Any doctor who honestly believes Mary Kate Olsen has a serious need for Oxycontin probably should have never been smart enough to go thru med school.
