Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Not a Raiders fan. Always been a Bears fan, and was a huge Bills fan during the Kelly era(McMahon and Kelly my two fave QBs).
Yeah, that Raiders franchise is so horribly run that its hard to really analyze any potential talent there. They could have Joe Montana on that team and the world would never know it until he went to another team. Only reason that team isn't regarded as a major clusterfuck(and thats what it is) is because of the history it has in the league.
Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Just saw this as a news report on my fantasy site.
Kyle Orton will start the Bears' preseason opener on Thursday against the Chiefs, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: Obviously anything can still happen, but this announcement has to give Orton the early lead in the NFL's least impressive quarterback derby in recent memory.
As a Bears fan, I really don't know what to say when I read this stuff anymore.
Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Wow. Now that I'm over the shock, let Kyle start. People forget that amazing win streak the team had in 2005 while he was QB. He sucked and the Bears averaged around 12 points a game, but they were winning with him. They throw Grossman in there and the team starts falling apart.
Grossman is nothing. Never will be anything either. Just let Kyle run the show until a decent "QB of the future" can be established.
The franchise killed itself when Jones bailed, so Bill Cosby could join the team and it doesn't really matter.
Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Looks like Favre's days in Green Bay are numbered after all. A deal with the Bucs seems imminent. For Brian Griese and a draft pick. Could be announced as early as today.
Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
GREEN BAY, Wis. '” The Brett Favre era in Green Bay is now officially over. But Favre's legendary career is not.
The month-long saga has finally come to an end, with the Packers agreeing to trade their future Hall-of-Fame quarterback to the New York Jets, FOXSports.com has learned.
The exact compensation was not immediately known, but it is believed to be a single draft pick that increases in value depending upon how the Jets perform during the 2008 season.
As a result of this, the Jets will likely release a quarterback. Signs have been pointing to Chad Pennington as the likely culprit because the team will need to free up cap room to fit Favre's contract under the salary cap.
The Jets were much more aggressive than the Bucs in their pursuit of Favre all along. The bigger issue was getting Favre on the same page as the Packers front office as far as the Jets were concerned.
Finally, late Tuesday, Favre talked to Jets head coach Eric Mangini and others in the organization for the first time as they tried to convince Favre he would be a good fit in New York.
The Packers had been hopeful of getting a deal done with the Jets for two reasons. One, it was the better offer on the table as far as the quality of the compensation. Two, it sends Favre out of the conference, meaning a meeting in the playoffs is an extreme longshot.
This trade caps a roller-coaster offseason ride for Favre '” the 38-year-old owner of nearly every meaningful passing record in NFL history '” and the franchise that became synonymous with his legendary No. 4 jersey. Favre's on-again, off-again retirement has monopolized headlines for the past two months as news began trickling to the media that the legendary passer was second-guessing both his retirement decision and his status in Green Bay.
The sports world first bid farewell to Favre in a nationally-televised press conference on March 6. At the time, the decision to retire seemed somewhat of a surprise considering the resounding success of Favre's 2007 campaign '” 4,155 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes, plus career-highs in both completion percentage (66.5 percent) and yards per attempt (7.8). In other words, one of pro football's best quarterbacks ever to play was his most accurate while throwing more deep balls than ever before ... in his 17th NFL season.
Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
I'm literally in shock. Not that they would trade him, but that he agreed to go to the Jets. Yeah the NFL is an "anything goes" league now, not sure if the Jets even fall into that category. He will be contending with NE and a Bills team that seems to be improving.
Baltimore should have made a serious run for Favre.
Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
Only trade chance is in the AFC, and he mentioned NY Jets, Buffalo, and Baltimore as the primary targets(in that order).
Looks like that NFL Network insider really is an insider. He was the only one to consistently mention these teams, and Favre went to the first team on his list.

Yeah the Jets will be better. I'm sure they arent going to overtake the Pats in that division but they will comepete for the wildcard. Its a good move, and I'm happy as a pig in shit that he didnt stay in the NFC (Bucs or Vikes), though I wish for his legacy he would've stayed retired. Favre's my favorite non-Giant player.

Re: The NFL 2008 Offseason Thread
I don't like it. But that's as a Bills fan. I really thought the Bills were the clear number 2 team in the division but with Favre the Jets stock does rise (although with him it could also drop, there's no guarantee he'll be anything like he was last year). He can't possibly be worse than Pennington though. Pennington and the hype he got his first couple of years is the biggest joke in AFC quaterbacking this decade. He was, is, and will always be awful.
I wonder if Garcia's being in Tampa made it look less attractive to Favre. Maybe he doesn't want competition for the job - and if that's true, maybe he'll be lazy enough to play like he did 2-3 years ago.
GO BILLS!
