Re: 12 Highly Overrated Movies (That You Probably Like)
Agree wholeheartedly with Crash.. All the hype for the Oscars, I watched it, it was really pretty bad. A movie about racial stereotypes by using stereotypes is pretty weak. Never understood the hype. Gotta disagree with Monster & Oceans 12 & 13. Monster was good IMHO, Charlize Theron played it really well. Oceans 12 & 13 were just pretty bad sequels, not sure I'd call them "Highly overrated", I think everyone says they were pretty bad. That'd be like calling American Graffiti 2 (or whatever) or Blair Witch 2 Highly overrated.

Yes, but don't set your expectations all that high. He's right about the "inside jokes", it does seem pretty ad-libbed. Plus, the script & hi-jacks are pretty weak. Instead of 1 big heist, it's a more like a few different heists. They're not as good. 13 is a little better, & back to it's original intent. They give the smaller characters more time as well. I liked the first one alot, & think the sequels are ok, but just that, ok. Some people think they are atrocious, & I can understand why. Be warned.
I didn't like Crash because it tried to deal with stereotypes, but used stereotypes. Crooked cop, Sandra Bullock as fearful prejudiced rich housewife, black theives etc.. Just an overload of every extreme stereotype. Came off as plastic to me.
Re: 12 Highly Overrated Movies (That You Probably Like)
Crash (2004): Employing an ensemble of hackneyed characters does not a good movie make (despite what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would like you to believe). None of the characters have any depth and merely serve to propel the not-so-subtle, interconnected storylines forward. It's implausible, inane, and ultimately, wafer thin.
The Departed (2006): On behalf of the Academy, the directing and best picture Oscars must have been a sop to Martin Scorsese. Jack Nicholson pulls an Al Pacino - i.e., he yells or gets angry throughout the film. The characters use cell phones in a manner that borders on slapstick comedy. And Mark Wahlberg ends up wearing garbage bags over his sneakers. Gross...
So fucking true. Both movies were terrible in my eyes and were so damn overhyped by my friends... they both had flat as hell characters

Re: 12 Highly Overrated Movies (That You Probably Like)
I still want to see The Departed, that's the first bad thing I've heard about it.
He's right about Oceans 12, Oceans 11 is pretty good to be fair, but 12 is a disgrace from start to finish, Julia Roberts as a character called Tess who pretends to be Julia Roberts because they look alike is just laughable. I didn't think 13 was too bad though, somewhere between 11 and 12 and much closer to 11 in terms of plot etc.
Re: 12 Highly Overrated Movies (That You Probably Like)
Just to be fair, i haven't seen all these movies, but the ones i have seen i don't think are as great as the general public does. Cast Away was a huge dissapointment after all the hype, Insomnia was just okay.
The best thing about Monster was how ugly they made Charlize. And that's enough to make anyone never able to look at her the same again.
I agree with this guy that a much better trick would be making Sarah Jessica Parker attractive. Never understood how people think she's so beautiful.

But that doesn't make it "overrated", that just makes it a BAD movie. I don't recall 1 review stating Oceans 12 was great, or even pretty good.
The Departed is awesome though APE, imho at least.
