I'm not as big into Soundgarden as I used to be. Superunknown at one stage was like the holy grail to me. These days I really enjoy listening to Chris Cornell's solo work. I'd also like to see him cover a few more songs. Imo he brought Billie Jean to a whole new level. Having an awesome cover with a load of new material which ranges vocally to everything you would ever want in an album; She'll Never Be Your Man, Arms Around Your Love, Roads We Choose, Killing Birds, and the first class Bond tune You Know My Name; there is truely something on Carry On for everyone, and thats why I hold the album (and his solo work in general) in a very high regard. I can't wait for his next album which is due out sometime this year I believe.

What the fuck happened to Chris?  I posted a large rant on another forum yesterday about how he's pretty much lost his balls.  Take the worst of Soundgarden and it is still way beyond that newest song he's made- Long Gone.

Watch this video, probably one of the best SG performances i've heard.  Then check out the second video, a live one for Slaves and Bulldozers

Soundgarden needs to come back!  These guys could blow ANY band out of the water that has come out since the mid 90's.

I heard the single yesterday. Sounded like a slow NIN song, had an electronic drum beat to it, I didn't seem to hear much guitar. Small change, didn't sound drastically different. It was called 'Screamer' I belive.

A4L I can't stand Carry On. It was the biggest musical disappointment of last year, and that's a year that includes NIN's Year Zero and the Smashing Pumpkins' return. Euphoria Morning is so much superior. Carry On is just a collection of sad, slow, depressing songs sung by an old man. Billie Jean being a prime example.

Yeah i didn't dig Carry On either...because I liked the 5 soundgarden tracks I knew, and liked Audioslave's first album and liked that Bond single I got the whole album...but was pretty disapointed in the rest of it other than the bond track really.

Thanks for all the recomendations james and everyone else..i'll hit itunes tonight wink

Cornell's solo work will never come within a light year of Soundgarden. He gets too much credit for the band's success. He obviously played a huge role, but without Thayil and Shepard he can only dream of having that type of musical output again.

Cant believe we don't have a thread here already for them. As some of you know, Soundgarden is my 2nd favorite band, and in some ways even eclipse GNR in my opinion. Anyways, started this thread because I've been listening to Down on the Upside tonight. I have a new appreciation of this album. It was a pretty bold direction. Never bothered with this album much over the years, and for some reason only concentrated on the Louder than Love-Superunknown period. I remember listening to this album and being disappointed in it and gave up. Following up Superunknown was impossible though. They set their own bar too high.

Its great though. Wide range of music here, and Shepard really stands out on the album. If you haven't heard this album, definitely go download it.

Oh, and......

blow these Chinese Democracy sessions out of the water. Cornell, please reunite this band.

If you've never heard Superunknown, grab that one as well because its one of the greatest albums ever made.

huge SG fan and this was certainly a departure and much overlooked

they were a phenomonal band on so many levels - Superunknown is hard to top alright, but in many ways Down on the upside showed a lot more sublety and scope

why they arent given more props is beyond me - one of the giants IMO

You gave up on this album too early James.  Like you said, Superunknown was an album that would have been near impossible to top.  Judging by this album, i don't think that was their goal.  What they came out with was an album that was in a lot of way more subtle than their other ones.

Great album.  Certainly very different from their previous ones, but all the members shine on this album like any other.  It's got some great lyrics and vocals from Cornell.

Fully agree that he needs to reunite this band.  This is another band i could see making an album that's actually worth something again.
