Re: Soundgarden
Cant believe we don't have a thread here already for them. As some of you know, Soundgarden is my 2nd favorite band, and in some ways even eclipse GNR in my opinion. Anyways, started this thread because I've been listening to Down on the Upside tonight. I have a new appreciation of this album. It was a pretty bold direction. Never bothered with this album much over the years, and for some reason only concentrated on the Louder than Love-Superunknown period. I remember listening to this album and being disappointed in it and gave up. Following up Superunknown was impossible though. They set their own bar too high.
Its great though. Wide range of music here, and Shepard really stands out on the album. If you haven't heard this album, definitely go download it.
Oh, and......
Applebite
Boot Camp
Overfloater
blow these Chinese Democracy sessions out of the water. Cornell, please reunite this band.
If you've never heard Superunknown, grab that one as well because its one of the greatest albums ever made.

Re: Soundgarden
I only know a few songs...but those I know are great...like Slaves and Bulldozers, Outshined, Rusty Cage...
I really loved those and then to a lesser extent liked the other songs I heard on the radio like Spoonman and Black Hole Sun
is the rest of their stuff vocally badass like those?

Re: Soundgarden
When you download Down on the Upside, give those three tracks I listed a spin. They were going in an interesting direction. Great how Shepard continued to be influential on the tracks(musically and lyrically), and is at his peak here. Probably played a role in the breakup. It was always sort of Cornell's baby, and this guy started owning the songs on Superunknown, and influencing even more profoundly what wound up being their last album probably created tension.
Re: Soundgarden
Awesome band. And Superunknown is an epic album. Monkeychow check out "The Day I tried to Live" for vacal range. Also great from that album are 4th of July & Like Suicide. In addition to James' list I always like 'Gun'& 'Full on Kev's Mom' from their earlier stuff. I always liked those songs, not sure why, garage grunge I suppose.

Fair point, and Ultramega OK is a major shit stain on their discography, but you start getting glimpses of the coming brilliance on Louder than Love. Hands All Over is a far departure from "garage grunge", and they took it a huge step further on Badmotorfinger, which is when Shepard joined the band. Listen to their last four albums back to back and you can see the transition take place from a Cornell dominated band with the Thayil signature sound to a bassist no one knows of or cares about basically taking some control over what was probably the 3rd most popular rock band at the time.
One unique thing about them is how basically all their hits were the worst songs on the albums. Casual fans who only listened to them on the radio or have only downloaded the hits are missing out on tons of buried treasure.

Re: Soundgarden
Superunknown is one of the highlights of grunge, and I'd put this band number 2 of the big 4, right behind AIC. I don't really get their earlier stuff though, Superunknown and Down on the Upside suit me a little better, and I love Cornell's first solo album Euphoria Morning.
