Re: Favorite Stand-Up Comedian

Who's your favorite stand-up comic?

For me it's Mitch Hedberg, hands down. He was brilliant. Apparently there are plans to release another Hedberg album later in 08. Hopefully it is worthwhile and not just a cash-in. His last album was 03, and he toured regularly until his death in 05, so it's possible there's enough stuff to make another album.

Of the living, Daniel Tosh is one I think is always getting better. His way of adding on to jokes until they're so elaborate that they don't make sense is very well-crafted. He's also really cruel without resorting to swearing too much.

Carlin just died, he was a classic by any standard.

What Randall said. (Stanhope)  ... and by the way, it's great to see another Stanhope fan around.

Then What C.C. said (Hedberg)

Then Louis C.K.

Then there are the classics who those guys wouldn't exist without.  Carlin, Pryor, Bruce, Kinison, etc.  I generally like the guys that actually have something to say.

Mitch Hedberg and Dane Cook.

YES, I've heard all the accusations that Dane Cook steals material and so on; I don't care. I still think he's hilarious.

I saw a comparison of two bits on youtube about the material stealing.  I think whether you're a fan or not it's interesting to listen to.  That said, I'm a big Louis C.K. fan, so I'm pretty biased too.

My problem with him really doesn't have much to do with that though.  I simply think that he thinks he's much funnier than he actually is.  That's very offputting to me.  I'm not sure why exactly, and I've tried to explain it to is fans before but I don't really know if I got my point across or not.

That said, what you think is funny is all that matters in the end.  It's just like music, not everything is for everybody.

Re: Favorite Stand-Up Comedian

Dane was funny. Harmful If Swallowed is a very good album, Retaliation had its moments but his individuality seemed to shrink while his reliance on dirty language and imagery seemed to grow. Then his HBO special 'Vicious Circle' or whatever, that blew. He repeats things way too many times, and seems to enjoy his jokes more than anyone else.

Also the constant repeating of his jokes by other people really got to me. It bugged me because they'd be people who didn't really know many comedians, yet they'd be proclaiming him the greatest. Luckily his shitty film career has stifled this to some degree.
