Re: The Ultimate Showdown #2...WINNER ANNOUNCED
Weren't Panama & Jump the same song?! :-P
Jump is one of their worst songs. I understand why it got huge, but damn. Liked it when I was nine, but when buying the cassette, preferred tracks such as I'll Wait and Drop Dead Legs over Panama and Jump.

F.U.C.K. sucked and I never bought it. I still haven't heard Balance. Seriously.
Wow, seriously. I think F.U.C.K. is fantastic (I won't defend the name though). It's to me a perfect balance of poppy, with great music, and good songwriting.
And I think Balance is hugely underrated. I remember a lot people giving it shit because it's more Van Hagar with songs that have "love" in the title, but that never bothered me, then when the song from the greatest hits/Twister came out it looked like they had more coming like that... but they were done. It was kinda the opposite of Gn'R breaking up really, instead of going out with a whimper, they went out with a bang.
For the record, I love the fist solo album Hagar put out after VH too. "Marching To Mars", but it might just be that that record came out at a time where I consider it part of a soundtrack to a certain portion of my life..

It is, Balance is by far the best album they did with Hagar. I was actually starting to like them more and more at this point then they broke up!
By the way, I agree with James about Jump...it's not that good even though it was a big hit. I think it was like the biggest song of that year, if not it was close. House of Pain is my favorite from 1984, but I do like Panama, Drop Dead Legs and Girl Gone Bad.

Damn. Missed this thread with all the excitement lately. I like a lot of the Van Hagar stuff (Dreams on 5150 is definitely a favorite), but The original VH with Dave is just a whole different beast. Diamond Dave hands down for me.

I love House of Pain. I'm also a big fan of Hot For Teacher. A bit cheesy maybe, but it rocks. Course that could just be cause I'm a drummer and Alex plays mean swing feel time in that with some wicked cool fills.

I love House of Pain.
It's a great tune. Few people know that House of Pain was actually intended for their debut album. It is totally different than the version that ended up on 1984. For those of you interested: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2KH03J40

David Lee Roth, absofuckinglutely. Sure they had commercial success with Hagar the Horrible, but DLR helped put them on the map. The only song I like they did with Sammy (other than Right Now) is Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do. I mean, we all love Hot For Teacher, Panama, Jump, You Really Got Me, Pretty Woman, Big Bad Bill, Happy Trails, and all those other fun Roth songs. They got too serious and commercial when Hagar was brought in. Although, Gerry Cherone definitely deserves to win this hands down. hahaha

Twelve votes Roth, Two votes Hagar...Backslash, I'm sorry but I removed your vote for Gary!
I'll end this Saturday and the next Showdown will begin shortly after.
Re: The Ultimate Showdown #2...WINNER ANNOUNCED
and Van Halen had 5150, OU812, and F.U.C.K.(who came up with those lame names??).
I thought OU812 was a comeback to DLR "Eat em & Smile"... Anyway, I'm not a huge VH fan, and I thought some of the songs from 5150 were on OU812, but it is Van Hagar nonetheless. Like you said, more poppy, less raw, but I suppose I liked it. Myb for me it was that Jump & Panama VH I was a kid, by 1990 I was now in high school, so it was a whole new band. F.U.C.K. I thought was good, with Poundcake, Runaround, Right Now, & Top of the World, some pretty good Hagar tracks.
Either way, they were 2 very good bands (although probably better with DLR). With that & ACDC I don't know if anyone else has done it to such a magnatude of successful continuation.

Winner by TKO .... "Diamond Dave"!!! With a vote of 12-2 over Hagar, Roth proves that while good writing (the Hagar era) may have its virtues NOTHING is better than balls out, good time Rock N Roll like Classic Van Halen!
Backslash...don't worry, I will NEVER tell anyone that Gary Cherone was your vote here simply because you were biased as Extreme were your "metal" gods!
