I did a search and didn't find a Pumpkins thread to my surprise, and given the recent debate on Zeitgeist in the GN'R section I figured we should get a Pumpkins thread going.

My SP collection consists of Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, Adore (which I haven't listened to very much), Zeitgeist (+ American Gothic), and Pisces Iscariot (which I just got).

My favorite album from them at the moment is Siamese Dream, which seems to have a sublety and almost magical feel to it. It's something different, and has perfect Pumpkins tone. Mellon Collie is also pretty damn good and has some cool weird stuff, on the second disc especially, but I don't like the rockers as much. Adore, I need to listen to more. Pisces is really as good as any of these albums but it lacks a single-worthy rocker.

Zeitgeist kicks your ass and as a straight up rock album it's really good, but it doesn't feel like Pumpkins to me. It's too big, and Billy's voice is too high in the mix (not to mention the chorus of Billy's sometimes involved), and there's not as much depth to the sound. If it was another band I'd like it more, and if it had different production as a Pumpkins album I'd like it more. American Gothic EP is god-awful.

I will spend more time with Adore and Pisces, then maybe move on to get Gish or Machina.
