Re: Top Ten Songs of the 80's
This guy is a Velvet Rope poster and he did a top 100 list of 80's songs. Pretty good list in my opinion and nice shout out to SCOM and The Replacements Bastards of Young.:peace:
Re: Top Ten Songs of the 80's
heres the blurb from the page:
Opening with one of the most memorable guitar riffs in the history of rock music, this song takes us on a romantic journey that begins with a fond recounting of the singer's admiration of the woman he loves'¦ but then it takes us slowly to a much darker and harrowing place.. this part of the story is told through the greatest rock guitar solo ever recorded'¦ The fact that Slash was still a teenager when he laid it down is mind blowing'¦ I know MY mind was blown.. I became a G'N'R fanatic for a time there.. NOTHING rocked this hard the time it came out.. We all know the phenomena that was Gun [sic] N' Roses, so I won't rehash it, but it really was a breath of fresh air at the time.. Most people say it was Nirvana that blew it all open.. but it was really Guns N' Roses.. they just fucked it up with all their shenanigans.. If Axl hadn't been such a douchebag, they would be held in the highest of esteem now... I find it an interesting now in retrospect that the song ends with the poignant question.. 'Where do we go now?''¦ like Axl himself didn't know where to go, after they had reached the mountaintop.. It could've gone in so many different directions'¦.
Instead, they have this one album'¦. and NO ONE disputes it's greatness.. I guess that's enough'¦. It's one of the greatest of all time.. and this song is the greatest song on it..
I dont think I'd go so far as to say its the greatest song on the album. I'd personally go with rocketqueen or Mr. Brownstone.
Re: Top Ten Songs of the 80's
It's a good list, starts off kinda New Wave though. My brother had a few XTC tapes. That song is ok, not sure I'd put it in top 10. Mad props for that grandmaster Flash photo. Classic. Pixies were great, probably most underrated band of all time/best underground band since Velvet Underground.
Personally I think You gotta fight by the beasties, something by Def Leppard (Pyromania?) & Livin on a Prayer should be on that. I do think SCOM is the greatest song of the 80's, & one of the best ever. Glad I lived thru it.
Re: Top Ten Songs of the 80's
SCOM was number 4 and Bastards of Young by the Replacements was 3...here is there blurb and you can listen to the song at the site.
'God, what a mess'¦ on the ladder of success..'
God, what a great opening line..
This song is the ultimate rocker'¦ It is the template for the modern rock song'¦ It carouses.. it careens'¦ and it stomps.. and through it all it's got a great melody too.. a GREAT melody.. Paul Westerberg has one of the great voices of all time.. it's ramshackle quality perfectly fits with the sound of the band'¦ I love how he goes all out in the chorus after the solo.. which, by the way, is rousing and phenomenal.. He is also one of the greatest rock songwriters.. his pop sensibility is fucking enviable.. I've tried a million unsuccessful times to re-write this song.. not even getting in the same universe..
One more thing'¦ Best...Ending...For...A'¦Song...Ever..
