Ok, name 3 bands that have come out in the last 3-4 years that are any good being played on the radio?? I don't know about where you live but radio here (not including Sirius or XM) only plays Foo Fighters, Kid Rock, or Weezer and Linkin Park new songs. Everything else is 90's rock, with some 70's & 80's mixed in. I cannot name 1 new band aside from cheapass crap like Fallout Boy or the other crappy band that sounds like them. The Killers are ok.
Well like you said The Killers, Silversun Pickups, Neverending White Lights(Canadian), City and Colour(Canadian). That's four right there that are far and away better(in my opinion) than Death Cab for Cutie. My point here is Death Cab is nothing special and have built a fake reputation. Just so it's clear I'm not saying you or anyone on this site listens to music for image sake. It's obvious that all of us hear have a good ear for music and what we decide to listen to is a legit decision. My point is a band like Death Cab is being swallowed up by fake music fans who's attention span is next to zero. they heard it on teh O.C. so it must be cool. Teeny boppers are buying a band like Death Cab cause they're "indie" and that in itself gives their cd/music collection some credibility. In my opinion it's an embarassment that when one critic hails a band other music journalists tend to follow like sheep and fans follow likewise. An example being the Cure's last album. Hailed by critics and fans upon release yet a year down the road most all critics label it as a "for diehard fans only" type of album and oddly enough the fans hailing it a year earlier were now agreeing with the critics. All in unison their opinions on the album coincided. What the hell is that? I own a Death Cab cd, I had to see what all the hype was about and what I came to realize was that the hype was all about hype and not substance. They don't do anything different or special. In fact I find them extremely boring. The feather in their cap was they were on the O.C. and endorsed by celebrity "indie geek" Adam Brody so they get on the mainstreme radio while a kickass band like The National flounders on myspace pages. We'll have to agree to disagree PaSnow but in my opinion when a band has been given every opportunity to become really popular and they aren't that says enough for me to believe(and know to an extent) that they are as much industry hype as the latest Britney album.
And for the record there's nothing wrong with Foo Fighters and Weezer;)

Well for the record I'm not a big fan of either band, I'm too old for anything new, I'm just pointing out that there is new music out there. I never heard of the Canadian bands you mentioned btw. I think a big part of why they & other bands didn't hit it is that younger audiences listen to ipods & myspace therefore rock radio does not parlor to them. WHich is why new music is Kid Rock, Foo, Weezer etc. I don't have a problem with them either. Just that for an 18-25 year old, I would think they would expect new bands to bee played for them, like GnR, Nirvana and Soundgarden were for me. But since younger people don't listen to the radio as much, and find new music on their own & create their own Ipod mixes I would guess rock radio's playlist caters more towards an older age group, therefore the older bands are still being played.
It's just my guess, which was touched upon by the OP's article.
