Re: The Keddie Resort Murders
On April 11th, 1981, in a small resort cabin nestled in the Hills of northern California, a triple murder took place so horrific it still haunts the area to this day.
That morning around 9:00a.m., Sheila Sharp, who had stayed the night at a neighbor's house not more than 15 feet away, walked through her front door, not knowing what she was about to see would change her life forever. Directly inside, on the floor, were her 16 year old brother, John Sharp, and his 17 year old friend, Dana Wingate. Both were bound hand and foot, stabbed, and hammered to death. There was blood on every surface of the cabin. On the blood-soaked couch was her mother, Sue Sharp, also murdered in the same brutal fashion. Amazingly, her 2 younger brothers and a friend were in a back bedroom, untouched. However, her younger sister, Tina, was missing.
The walls had cuts on them, the furniture was busted up, and the victims were beaten. However, no one seemed to hear anything that night. The case quickly grew cold, and rumors of the town being haunted hurt the community so deeply it eventually became a ghost town, with only a hand full of residence living there today.
To this day, the case remains unsolved.

04/11/1981 ? p.m. Marilyn Smartt asks Sue if she would like to go to the Keddie Bar with Marty and Bo, and presumably Marilyn
04/11/1981 ? p.m. Martin Smartt (Marty) and John Boubede (Bo) go to Keddie bar. Was Marilyn there with them?
04/11/1981 9:30ish p.m. John & Dana hitch hiked from Oakland Camp to Keddie
04/11/1981 9:30 p.m. Onward Murders take place
04/12/1981 1:00-2:00 a.m. Marilyn Smartt sees Marty Smartt burning something in the wood stove
04/12/1981 7:00 a.m. Shiela returns home from neighbors to discover horror. Sheila sees dead bodies and a knife she thinks is a pocket knife that turns out to be a 'bent' knife.
04/12/1981 ?7:10ish a.m. Neighbor calls Plumas County Sheriff's Department (PCSD)
04/12/1981 ?7:20ish a.m. First Deputies arrive on scene, younger Sharp children removed from scene, along with Justin. So all three boys in the back bedroom at this time.
04/12/1981 All Day Crime scene cordoned off, investigation begins, neighbors and friends questioned? Justin questioned. Justin insists Tina is missing. Determine that wires used to bound bodies were taken from the room shared by Sue/Sheila/Tina.
Boys found on floor, Sue laying on couch.
Henry Thompson and Chuck Walkee questioned by PCSD, released shortly thereafter.
04/12/1981 A.M. Determined Tina was in Cabin 28 and is now missing, along with 'shoebox' that was Tina's school project? The shoebox was apparently taken from the kitchen.
04/12/1981 10:00 a.m. Mr. Doris receives call to identify body.
04/12/1981 Unknown Marty Smartt goes to Reno?
04/12/1981 5:00/6:00 p.m. Marty Smartt at Meeks' house, wanting to go back to Keddie. Mrs. Meeks believe Marty is high on something.
04/12/1981 9:00 p.m. Mrs. Meeks talks Marty into staying at the house and not returning to Keddie.
04/13/1981 4:00 a.m. Marty leaves Meeks home and presumably returns to Keddie
04/13/1981 Unknown Marilyn Smartt questioned?
Smartt cabin searched, Clubhouse searched
Tina's jacket found? Justin's shoes taken for evidence?
04/14/1981 Unknown Justin telling his brother about the crime and demonstrating how to stab. Justin says 'I have to protect Sue.' Marty grabs Justin and tells him never to talk about it again.
Unknown Justin under hypnosis. Describes watching Love Boat, describes the 'fight.' States Sue 'thrown overboard.' Provides description of suspects.
Both men wear glasses. One has long hair and moustache, the other has shorter hair and no facial hair.
Unknown Dates Martin Smartt and John Boudee (Bo) picked up for questioning
PCSD searches Smartt cabin and small outbuilding. A jacket, believed to belong to Tina, was found 'under the house.' The jacket had blood on it.
PCSD meets Marilyn at the 'clubhouse' (small outbuilding near Smartt house). Marilyn notices that the floorboards have been torn up. Marilyn says the floorboards were not that way when she was there on the previous weekend.
1984 Tina's remains found at Feather Falls, in the Feather River Canyon. Approximately 50 miles from Keddie.
1997 Unknown PCSD tells Sheila Sharp that Marty is dead.
2002 Martin Smartt died.
2002 Memorial service for Tina. Placement of headstone.
Summer 2004 Cabin 28 destroyed.

Just heard about this crime for the first time tonight. Haven't dove in to any theories on that site(yet), but there are two red flags in the timeline....

Basically this Oakland to Keddie trip by those two sealed the victims' fate. Sounds like maybe some deranged killer picked the two up hitchhiking, and either followed them to the cabin or was allowed in.
Then there's this oddity in the timeline...

That is anything but random. Had the girl been abducted from the scene, that's one thing. The crime became personal the moment they either took the object with them or allowed her to take it.
The brutality of the murders suggests it was personal, but the abduction(and murder) of the girl pretty much confirms it.

I never heard of this case before. I can't even get a feeling as to what happened. I am going to have to research further.

I never heard of it either, and its practically in my backyard. 1981 must have been a busy year for a case of this magnitude to slip through the cracks.
Not much info online, and a few nuts even think its a hoax(probably because The Strangers was apparently inspired by this case and a few others).
There's supposed to be some obscure documentary about this. Gonna dig through that site later and see if I can find it.

hey everyone. im from the area. didnt live there at the time though. there has been a lot of attention coming to this story mainly from the movie "the strangers". you can see the documentary on you tube. just search keddie murders and i think it will pull it up for you auto. also there are a couple of websites where family friends and those like myself, have been talking. many have been around for years. one website is cabin28.com and the other is keddiemurdersmovie.com. there is a lot of stuff you would have to sift through to get any answers on cabin 28. although if you look closely there are a lot fo good things. as for the other one, its fairly knew and uncluttered with smack talking. anyway, check it out and tell everyone you know. this case needs to finally get solved!

have you tried the keddiemurdersmovie.com site? that one is way better. some very fresh views on the whole thing. many people believe that two men, marty and bo, were the ones responsible. justin, marty's step-son was in the house the same night this happened. but he isnt talking. in the documentary he acted very strange as well as his mother. like they had something to hide. once people started talking about him and his mother possibly having some sort of link to this, he demands gratuities and that his interview be removed from the documentary. also there is a poster named craig walters. he always throws himself into the middle of everything. he also claims that he was the ones that gave them a ride home that night but wont tell police this information. there are a lot of good theories floating around. some think thats its because of drugs, others because of tina. they both seem to be the main objects that people focus around. i dont have any theories as of yet. but im almost certain that craig played a major role other than giving them a ride home. he claims that him and the two boys did a drug rip off 6 days or so before the murders. but he wont say who they ripped off. he has selective memory and will only remember things the way he wants, when he wants and only if it benefits him somehow.
