Somewhere we took a sharp left turn at taking things in this thread far too seriously.

Well this isn't a bullshit thread. It was always meant for a serious opinion... a sharp turn? I assume you're referring to my post, a response to a thread I created within a day of its creation. There was no turn. I'm not interested in just throwing out names for the fuck of it. If you really like Coolidge give a reason and if not, why even say anything?

FDR. He guided the country thru the Great Depression and WWII, two of the biggest events of the 20th Century. He formed the WPA began hiring men to keep people employed and able to feed their families, began the building of this countries roads and highways, started the FDIC and took steps to prevent another great stock market crash of 1929, started the origins of Social Security, After Hawaii was bombed he entered WWII and whooped ass, catapulting America into the Superpower it became known to be. After the war, the country was set for prosperous economic times, as the post-war housing boom le to construction of homes in cities and towns across the country, leading post-war men & women to get married, buy a house and a car, hit the bedroom & give birth to the Baby Boomers. All this while in a fucking wheelchair, and alot of the American public didn't even know it.

I wouldn't have challenged you had you listed things about him you like, other than "I really like the man". You didn't mention a piece of legislation, or handling of events, hell, you didn't even list a personality trait you liked about him.

I haven't done a single thing in this thread that indicates that I feel my opinion is better than anyone elses. You just refuse to tell me what you actually think, or you threw out a name with little to no thought or reasoning whatsoever. People who gave reasons to their preference (James with Reagan, and GS's agreement; PaSnow with FDR) have gotten no opposition from me. Although this thread can have some level of debate, it's totally respectful as long as there are points given to examine.

You do not support your choice, so I'm left to assume that you can't. And just because you can't support your favorite, either through poor communication skills or a lack of historical knowledge, does not make me an arrogant poster creating threads for the sole purpose of winning arguments. Lots of people here know a ton more about history than I do.

Lincoln, Jackson and Kennedy are the obvious ones. Always appreciate a guy that takes the fight to the bankers.

I think my favorite however will be Nixon. Dropped the gold standard, got out of Vietnam and improved the standard of living. Though the biggest factor is probably his end. They wouldn't even give him the honorable assassination. He had to walk out with his tail between his legs. That tells me he must have been really getting on their nerves. Kudos.

Nixon?? Are you joking?

Seriously.

The only reason he wasn't shot is because he adopted a fiat currency. Only reason Johnson wasn't killed is because he kept the war machine going. Had Vietnam not been happening, Johnson would have been killed as well.

Kennedy was president for a nanosecond, and spent half of that nanosecond doing nothing but fucking.  Probably the 3rd worst president behind Carter and Hoover, and I would rate both Bushes ahead of JFK.

It's not a landslide, I can say that.

I don't have any decisive factors, for that the information is too broad and diluted.

But if they want you gone you're probably doing something right. I somewhat respect Nixons apparent frustration and anger towards the system that put him in 'power', especially since he was in bed with them from the beginning.

Besides, "I'm not a crook" is classic.

Guess I just like the guy.

Re: Favorite President?

I like Nixon. I lot of good in there. But then again I go to a very liberal school and a couple different idiots consider himt he epitome of conservatism and evil, which he isn't at all. He's actually pretty moderate.

I love the way he went to China and got SALT 1 signed (And the Anit-Ballistic Nissile Treaty), and detente in general is very honorable considering his strong anti-communist reputation with Eisenhower. The way JFK and Johnson delt with the Cold War was getting us in trouble and Nixon helped cool things off.

The Environmental Protection Agency was created under his rule, he increased pay to federal workers, and kept most of Johnson's Great Society programs funded. He didn't feel the need to strike them down just because they were set up by Democrats.

I'm not a bi fan of his character, but his policies were right for the time. He spoke alot about taking the profit out of war, which is something I would love to see happen. I think Nixon is the best we've had from his time to the present (sorry, not a Reagan fan).

Nixon couldn't hold Reagan's jockstrap, and that aint no lie. I'm not a Nixon basher, but he had way too many flaws. He does deserve credit where due, and I agree that the ABM treaty took major balls to sign. Very controversial, and the signing of that affected foreign policy for decades.
