Re: Favorite President?

Since this board is predominantly American, or at least North American, I'm curious who's everyone's favorite US President in history.

If you're not American, you can still voice an opinion on your favorite US leader or your favorite leader of your own country, but please list what country you're from.

I'm currently reading a biography on James K. Polk, whose always been one of my faves for how hard-working he was, his pledge to do a single term to avoid the politics of re-election, and his policies on tariffs and expansionism (Texas, Oregon and California is all Polk).

I also like Nixon, TR, Wilson, FDR somewhat, Lincoln of course...

I'll have to think about it more.

No president even comes close to Reagan.  He walked into the office with this country up shit creek without a paddle, and left the office with the US pretty much at the peak of its power. While he fought no major wars, the 80's were one of the most volatile decades in the Cold War.

One thing that definitely separates him from other presidents is he basically achieved everything he set out to do while in office, and did it with a majority of opposition in the Congress.

Also, the 80's are an entirely different decade if Reagan doesn't beat Carter. The environment that allowed 80's pop culture to flourish never would have developed had the malaise of the Carter administration continued through 1984.

Whilst not American, I gotta vote for Reagan. Reason:  He was an actor. Poor reason I know but I really don't know much else.

Well, if you want reasons, his economic policies of lassiez-faire and hands-off government allowed the circumstances causing the Great Depression to grow. He was VP to Harding, arguably the worst US president with a ton of corruption surrounding him, and upon assuming the Pres role did not ask any of the corrupt Cabinet members to resign. He vetoed the Bonus Bill, which is not dissimilar to Hoover's actions towards veterans, it just wasn't as bad economically as it would be for Hoover. He also vetoed a bill to help farmers out, who had a tough time in the "roaring" 20s.

I mean, if you're into small government Coolidge isn't bad, but considering the economic crisis that hit not even 4 years after his presidency I wonder wh you'd consider him best.

I like him mostly, but there are certainly reasons not to - and this thread is kind of useless without discussing why you prefer a certain president over others.

Somewhere we took a sharp left turn at taking things in this thread far too seriously.
