Re: Heart Stopper- possible upcoming horror flick
Been talking to this guy on myspace. He is writing this script, and is looking for feedback. Figured I'd post the basic concept he is aiming for. Everyone here is intelligent, so give your opinions on what he is trying to do, whether its actual ideas for his script or your opinions on the concept in general.
Usually, no matter what horror movie you see, you never get that one thing you were hoping for, especially in slasher flicks. Well in 2009, a new slasher flick with an R-RATING will hopefully be hitting theaters everywhere, but there's a twist. You guys, get to make the movie...literally! Have a cool idea for a death? Tell us! Want really gory deaths? Tell us! Want really long chase scenes? Tell us! You name it, we'll TRY as hard as we can to stick it in. Unlike any other movie you seen before, this may be the PERFECT horror flick...why? Because it will be YOUR horror flick, that you never actually made. Ok that got a little confusing, just send us your idea's haha. Send them quick...the script is being written now! Thanks Guys For The Support!
and.....
The movie is called Heartstopper and it's about: When nine friends go camping in the middle of the woods, partying, laughter and wildness begins, but when they wake up next morning, one of the friends is missing, and the car is totaled. They hike and try to get to the nearest town, instead, finding a factory (The Grind-House), they break in to find help, and get locked in. The search soon turns to terror, as instead of finding their friend, they find someone else who has other plans for them'¦ Heartstopper is a proposed theatrical motion picture designed to capitalize on the seemingly insatiable desire of the lucrative 12-24 age range for horror films. This film would follow the successful formula of many recent horror films. A cast of up-and-comers will be placed in jeopardy via the scheme of the antagonist. A variety of gruesome deaths will satisfy those interested purely in gore, while a cast of 'easy-on-the-eyes' starlets will keep the young male audience entertained. Am ever-increasing level of tension and terror will appeal to the teen and early twenty female markets demographic. As Of Right Now, The Script Is Still Being Written.
After we've discussed this a bit, I'm gonna send him a link to this thread.
Re: Heart Stopper- possible upcoming horror flick
I guess I'll go first.
While the concept itself sounds interesting and could definitely work, at the same time it reeks of laziness, lack of any real structure, writer's block, and a host of other things.
The only clear cut vision is there is no vision. Its like one giant cliche that needs help.
Main idea I would offer is casting a black chick in the lead role. Its a pretty rare thing in the horror genre. Also, have the character who appears to be the main character in the beginning actually die first.

"a new slasher flick with an R-RATING"
"designed to capitalize on the seemingly insatiable desire of the lucrative 12-24 age range for horror films."
That's an oxymoron right there, even if kids do download movies they shouldn't basically watch. But you can't really get those pesky 12 year olds to the ticket stands with an R rating, sorry.
And the premise certainly sounds like the basic concept of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians. The Heartstopper Nine go camping, one disappears leaving them stranded, the remaining octet stumble upon a factory, in which most of them are met with gruesome demise. How original. From what I read from the brief, they have the structure mostly in place, and are currently fishing for the deaths themselves.
I'll suffice to say that most people don't know what a gunshot wound feels like, but almost everyone can relate to very mundane incidents, like broken nails. I personally go sheepish when the fingers are at stake, it's just too uncomfortable to watch. Also, all damage inflicted to the body feels worse when the person in the receiving end is naked (Janet Leigh in Psycho and Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises), because it gives in an elevated sense on insecurity and vulnerability. You don't really strip voluntarily unless you feel comfortable doing it, right? Try adding that to a sex scene.
I'll leave them with NIN's Happiness in Slavery video, which has performance artist Bob Flanagan meeting a rather unpleasant end. While hardly the most extreme of the bunch when it comes to the video works in the industrial culture, it's one thats been properly released. If they'd like to explore further, I'd point them to NIN's Broken movie and further on, to Thee Ritual ov Psychick Youth.

Re: Heart Stopper- possible upcoming horror flick
Well you hit the nail on the head with cliche James. Horror movies stop being scary when you feel like you've seen it before and the description for this film incorporates ideas from every horror film I've seen in the last 5 years.
That's probably no use to your friend but the next great horror film is going to have to break the mould again, not copy every other recent horror film. I'm not saying I know how that'll be done it isn't my job but ripping off every other film isn't going to do it. This film wants to be new and fresh nad it's just the opposite.
9 friends go camping, one goes missing etc, deaths ensue.....it's all been done quite literally to death. I don't expect you to give them this advise James but I'd say scrap it and start again. At least make it less cliche, the factory setting sounds good, lots of potential, but why not make it a family camping trip, just mess things up a bit, what's going to get people grabbing the edges of their seats a family trapped in some factory of horrors with children potentially victims or some nameless 'teens' half of whom you want to see get pulped cos they're so damn annoying anyway. Much more emotion to play on if it's a family caught up in it rather than your run of the mill 'Hank' who hates 'Wayne' cos he fucked 'Crystal' when they were still together etc.
Also horror movies rely too much on gore these days, it's a useful tool but on it's own gore doesn't make a good horror film, a good script and good actors are still required.
Re: Heart Stopper- possible upcoming horror flick
Something about this idea went astray.....
The guy rarely logs in to his myspace page, and amazingly, never added any graphics to his page. Its that same basic layout that you get when you first join myspace. Never even added anything like a logo or at least some basic art for the film.
This would mean nothing in the grand scheme of things since there are millions of writers and a large percentage of them always have a project in limbo, but this guy had the top horror films of this year(including The Strangers) promoting this all over myspace.
Talk about derailing your own train before it even leaves the station....
Obviously this was a bad idea. You should at least have a basic script(or an outline) finished before attempting to get an online buzz and proclaiming your film to be released in 2009 when it hasn't been written and definitely no interest among any production companies.
I'm starting to think this whole thing was a gag.
