Top Heavy Metal Musicians Select Favorite Guitarists Of All Time - May 19, 2008
Thiago Sarkis of Roadie Crew magazine (web site) organized a poll in which 330 guitarists were asked about their favorite guitarists of all time. Among the participants in the poll were current and former members of such bands as GUNS N' ROSES, KISS, MACHINE HEAD, NIGHTWISH, MEGADETH, SCORPIONS, TESTAMENT, ARCH ENEMY, KING DIAMOND, SEPULTURA, DIO, TWISTED SISTER, KAMELOT and DOWN (see full list below).
The results of the poll '” published in the new issue of Roadie Crew (#112) '” are as follows:

It's an interesting list. I don't agree with all of it but I don't have a problem with most of it either. There were a few that struck me as odd (like Hetfield and Angus Young so high), but I've seen much worse lists too. I think VR hurt Slash's stock because he used to be univerally higher than this in peer ratings (from what I recall).

It's actually a pretty decent list. I think I'm one of the few people who'd openly rank Eddie above Hendrix. I'm surprised Hetfield made the list at all, and the Slash thing really throws me. Glad to see guys like Steve Vai up there. Don't know where Buckethead is. More importantly, don't know where Joe Perry is! And Tipton and Downing I always lump together, personally. Seeing them both ranked but with space between them is really awkward.

Slash surprises me for being so low. As for Angus, I think it's "Favorite" not best, and everyone loves ACDC.
Dont feel bad.. Slash is no heavy metal guitarist.
Decent list. I wouldnt put a lot of those guess as HEAVY METAL. Brain May? Queen is not metal.

Buckethead not being on the list is a joke. I realize this is a "favorites"list, but it makes you wonder about the taste of some of these people.

Time itself is hurting the Slash/GNR stock. This has been apparent for years. Last year GNR wasn't even on the VH1 top 100 of the 90's, and years ago they were always top 3.
The GNR brand is being diluted near the point of irrelevancy. In a few years, Slash wont even show up on guitarist lists.

i doubt that slash could vote for himself like every other guy that participated and it takes more than one vote to get up there
it surprised me that bucket wasn't there but... i think guitarists from the new wave won't get so much credit just because they are new.
as you said it's "favorites" not "best". if you would ask me who is the best guitar player out there i would go towards bucket but if you'd ask me who's my favorite i'd say slash, no doubt about it. one of the reasons is the fact that i grew up with slash and i feel closer to his music whereas bucket, i discovered him when i was older. slash grew up listening to hendrix so i think he's more inclined to vote for him.

Okay I disagree with that. Why is Hetfield ahead of Hammet. Also I wouldn't consider some of those guitarists as "Heavy Metal" I mean Brian May definetly does not fit that category and as good as he is, Eddie Van Halen I wouldn't class as metal. They're all great guitarists just the some that are in this list, the some that aren't and the rank some received is a tad a'skew.
