More info about the plane itself here:

Funnily enough, our old buddy old pal and ChiDem contributor Brian May had been on the plane earlier this summer:

That's interesting.

Funny though....had May been involved at any point in the past, tons of speculation would have followed.

It shows how jaded the fan base is now.

Makes you wonder, had Brian formally joined GNR would his involvement been endorsement enough for the label to release ChiDem earlier?

It's definitely one of the 'What if" scenarios of the early CD years.

It couldn't have hurt. GNR were essentially a nameless, faceless band in that 97-99 period. Adding May most certainly raises their stock. Out of the handful of mentions the band got in that period, other than OMG/End of Days, Live Era release, and Woodstock rumor, most revolved around May.

Regardless of how the cookie crumbles, his inclusion made little sense. What's the point in having an A list guitarist appear on several songs as a guest on your big comeback album? It doesn't benefit the band itself...in fact it detracts from it. It makes the absence of Slash stand out even more...not only can they not replace him, they gotta bring in the guy from Queen!

On the other hand...star power is star power. GNR and May/Queen already had a connection.... If May is willing to play ball...and we know he was....if you've got a decent song and decent management, they might have been able to use video and create something similar to what happened with Santana's comeback featuring Rob Thomas...

A video where both Axl and May are the focus.

All the hype and overthinking was ridiculous in hindsight. All they needed is one song and they're back in the game. This is also the exact moment something was needed...it's right before the album attains its mythical status and the hype isn't out control. People simply want to hear them. Period.

The moment Axl started talking about doubles and triples he should've been told to piss off and come back down to reality.

They didn't need doubles, triples, and grand slams....they needed a single.

Agreed on all of the above.

He seemed obsessed with bigger and bigger statements. UYI as a two-disc made an impression (Springsteen tried the same thing but with less hype a year later) so of COURSE ChiDem had to be envisioned as three discs.

We are left with a million what ifs. All of which make more sense and do more for the band’s rep than what we actually got.
