Thelma and Louise - Hadn't watched it since it came out on VHS. This was pretty good but it starts going downhill when they hook up with Brad Pitt, get robbed, and then the so called chase starts....which isn't much of a chase. The ending sucks. No reason for such an extreme response.

In an alternate universe, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster are Thelma and Louise and Robert Downey Jr. is the Brad Pitt character.

They were signed on to the film but pre-production dragged out so long that both Pfeiffer and Foster pulled out. In Downey's case, they decided that they wanted someone taller. George Clooney also auditioned for this role.

I think it would have been a disaster.... Pfeiffer and Foster a total mismatch.

Collateral - There's a great movie here....but Tom Cruise basically ruins it. He cannot play a bad guy convincingly... especially an assassin. He's just playing Tom Cruise with an attitude.

Brad Pitt would have killed it in this role.

I also hated how Mark Ruffalo's character is killed. He's the only LE starting to put together what's really going on and you kill him so quickly and out of the blue like that?

It gets a bit ridiculous towards the end. I also can't stand Jada Pinkett. Only movies I liked her in is Menace II Society and Set It Off.

Regarding Henry - Harrison Ford plays a really good asshole at the beginning of this film.

Watching this...you can tell they were aiming much higher than they were able to. For starters, it feels like it was meant to get Harrison Ford an Oscar. It also wants to be this big emotional drama but falls a bit flat.

I can't stand Annette Benning....in anything.

Thelma is...good, but the feminist angle feels incredibly forced. Ridley has come a long way since then.

Funny, I think Tom Cruise is much more of a natural playing a bad guy than a hero. Matches his personality somehow. What ruins the movie for me is the ending which feels tacked on. After the two first daring acts we suddenly land in a cliched action finale and I think it's a wasted opportunity.

The Insider - to date the only movie I watched in the theater completely alone. It was just me and my father and 500 empty seats around us. Strange because this movie is just perfect. Everything is 10/10. Fantastic cast, great cinematography, music, writing. Perhaps Mann's best work. This type of movie just doesn't exist anymore.

Yeah, I thought Tom Cruise was great in Collateral. His performance in Magnolia was fantastic. I think he’s a better actor than both Pitt and Clooney, but the dude seems terrified of not being a huge megastar and wants to only do blockbusters.

I thought Cruise was great in Colleteral because he played against type and did it well.  I did remember not liking the ending that well like polluxm said.

The Killer--if you ever wondered what the fuss about John Woo or Chow Yun Fat was about this is the film to watch. Shootouts, car chases, themes of loyalty, brotherhood are all prevalent here.  Oh John Wick steals from this one, with all the gun action sequences.

The Replacement Killers---zzzzzzz.  Only runs 88 mins but I had trouble finishing this.  The story sucks and just functions to get to the gun battle scenes.  As opposed to the Killer where the gun battles are just a part of the story.  Oh, I have to mention, sometimes when foreign actors have to speak in English some part of their charm is lost.  And it's the case with Chow Yun Fat here.  I also feel the same way about Penelope Cruz, she's just far more interesting in Spanish speaking films.  Oh, one positive:  Mira Sorvino looks hot here.

I saw The Replacement Killers in the theater. It was when I was a huge fan of Sorvino before her career went into decline. I liked seeing her in an action film like that. I was also really stoned at the time.

I should watch it again.

Matchstick Men - This was great...one of Cage's best roles and Lohman really earned her It Girl status at the time. Since the climax winds up revolving around Rockwell, his character should've been shown more.

The tacked on ending blows. They thought audiences would hate the fact the main character is broke and desperate at the end so they added that "one year later" ending. Bullshit.

Super 8 - Out of all the movies set in the 80s(technically 1979) the past 10+ years, this might be the worst. It's literally a blatant ripoff of Spielberg style blockbusters and it gets tiring quick. I'm also tired of these movies always requiring the clique to have one fat kid, one nerd, and one girl for them to have the hots for. Change it up a little bit for fucks sake.

Horizon Line - A decent plot....guy and girl take a plane to a wedding but the pilot dies of a heart attack during the flight.

It's ruined by shitty acting, their relationship, and unrealistic action sequences. During the flight she goes from being a pilot, a doctor, and turns into Tom Cruise in MI.

The way they are conveniently saved at the last second was ridiculous.

I barely finished it.

Reservation Road -  Started out with a bang but quickly declines. The way it's all linked( his wife being the girls music teacher, him being Phoenix's attorney, etc) destroys the suspension of disbelief.

The way he instantly hides his SUV and drives a car rental from beginning to end is simply too big of a red flag. Someone would have picked up on this fairly quickly.

Couldn't wait for it to end.

Edit

unny, I think Tom Cruise is much more of a natural playing a bad guy than a hero. Matches his personality somehow.

I agree to an extent here...he's clearly an eccentric asshole in real life.

On the other hand....other than various 80s-90s films like Rain Man, 4th of July, A Few Good Men, and The Firm, I always see him as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible.

Maybe I should watch more of his later work. I've ignored way too many 21st century films from 20tb century icons. Just recently started watching Costner's later films.

Just saw a trailer for Bruce Willis last film and he’s not talking in any of the scenes. Just terrible. People are saying it was caused from head trauma when he was concussed in the film Tears of the Sun.

Bruce Willis will always be one of my favorite actors. Seeing him old and frail is a depressing reminder where we are heading. On the other hand you can always put on a movie and enjoy these actors when they are young and bouncing. The unique charm of movies. Take you to another place and another time.

The Silence

This movie is a good example of taking you to another time. Probably the strongest aspect it has. Looking at the career of Scorsese he didn't write a lot of movies, but those he did write are the best. He did write this and while it isn't great it is alright. He really should have written more himself than failing so often with other peoples ideas.

I watched Collateral today.  I thought Cruise was fine.  I mean his usual asshole, smug self but he wasn't really on autopilot and this was a different Cruise character than the usual.  I mean he was cold yet vulnerable.  As to the last third of the film, I thought it made total sense from a psycholgical POV.  From the beginning of the film, the Foxx character is basically bemoaning his fate.  I kinda got a laugh on the part where Vincent calls him out on his BS (12 years driving a cab "part time").  Well in the second half of the film, Max actually transforms into Vincent and "improvises" a whole lot.  I totally forgot the awesome cameo there by Javier Bardem as the druglord.  I'm pretty sure there's some more stuff on existentialism and lonliness that I totally missed on as well.  Oh I agree with Lofton, Ruffalo's death was awfully convienent.  Almost ruined that wonderful action sequence in the nightclub--I thought that was rather a fun improvisation by Vincent to get past all the obstacles (cops + gangsters).

Oh to end:  No one makes the night time seem as magical as Michael Mann.  It's the same with Thief.  Those neon drenched scenes at night with the rain slicked streets of Chicago are truly beautiful.
