Rewind - One of the best documentaries I've ever watched. It's about a young guy who was sexually abused as a kid and he goes through a bunch of old home movies to piece it all together. It's a bit similar to Capturing the Friedman's. He was molested by two uncles and a cousin. It's creepy seeing some of those home movies...on the surface they are a normal middle class family. You see how after he starts being molested he gains weight and starts acting out.

This is on Tubi and Hulu if anyone wants to watch it.

That Thing You Do - Hadnt watched this since it came out on VH1 in 97-98. The last time I ever watch it. It was ok but everyone but the drummer is unlikable.

The Accused - This was pretty good.  This put Foster on the A list...and deservedly so. It was almost like watching a new movie. I didn't remember the actual rapists going to jail so quickly. I never liked Kelly McGillis.

Notes on A Scandal - My favorite Cate Blanchett movie. Hadn't watched it in about 10 years or so. It's an amazing film but I wish they had focused even more on Judi Dench's character. She is really creepy here and I would've liked her story expanded a bit...maybe flashbacks of the previous woman she stalked.

Flatliners - Not nearly as good as I remembered it. It has a good cast and the story has potential but it's wasted here. It's basically the same thing over and over again for each character.  Crap ending too.

Guarding Tess - Snoozefest from hell.

Girl, Interrupted

Loved it. I might rewatch this in a few days. Angelina Jolie gets way too much credit for this and stole all the buzz. It's probably Winona's best film and Brittany Murphy has a great performance as well although too small. I also think less focus should've been placed on Jolie and expand the roles of one or two of the other girls who are essentially background characters.

Red Corner - I hate Richard Gere but it popped up on Tubi so decided to watch it. He's still unlikeable as always. Bai Ling is awesome in this. The story overall is ok but they drag it out far too long. You could easily cut 30 minutes out of this film.

True Romance - First time watching a Christian Slater film in the 21st century. Until watching this I had forgot about him. Same with Patricia Arquette. This was a solid film...great cast. It's always weird seeing Gandolfini in anything after watching him in The Sopranos.

Not Without My Daughter - I hadn't watched this since renting it for my grandma back when it came out on VHS. Not bad but in hindsight it feels like a glorified Lifetime movie. Another movie I'll never watch again.

8mm - I liked it but it feels like something is missing. It doesn't do a good job of pulling you into the story. They don't properly convey his obsession with finding out who is in the film and what happened to the point he's willing to risk the life of him and his family to figure it out

I forgot a few....

A League of Their Own - Holy shit... amazing. Moves up my list of favorite 90s movies. A perfect cast. Geena Davis of course and this is before both Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell became unlikeable.

Also loved Lori Petty's character.... and the character played by Freddie Simpson deserved a lot more screentime. At first it looks like she might become a main character but unfortunately fades into a minor role.

Before and After -  This had so much potential. An all star cast with Liam Neeson, Meryl Streep, and Edward Furlong. On the surface an interesting story about a girl getting murdered, it appears their son(Furlong) is involved, but he's missing too.

How did it go so wrong? It feels like a Lifetime movie...and it would certainly fit in on the channel.

I don't like how they handle the family drama. I don't buy that they would talk about all this shit in front of the young daughter. Another issue is you don't really sympathize with any of these characters. The ending also leaves much to be desired.

Mississippi Burning - This was damn good. Dafoe and Hackman had great chemistry.

I've seen a few of the movies that Lofton posted on so I'll just comment on those.

Notes on a Scandal:  solid film and as mentioned the Dench character is the best thing in the film.  She just goes batshit insane around halfway through the film.  And yeah, they should have expanded on her character.

Flatliners:  assuming this is the Kiefer Sutherland/Bacon/Julia Roberts film.  It's watchable.  The characters are almost all cocky, young brash times (well the males anyway).  For me it makes harder to relate to the characters.   I thought the Roberts character was the most interesting one.   It's definitely overrated and not as great as the rep.

8MM:  I disagree I think it does enough to make you believe in the Cage character and his obsession.  Or maybe I was bit leinient in this film since I had seen the George C. Scott film Hardcore a few weeks earlier.  Joquain Phoenix is pretty good as Cage's guide through the porno underworld.

I just looked up Hardcore. Adding that to my list. Never watched it.

Yeah it was the original Flatliners. Maybe I should watch the remake tonight since the original is fresh in my mind.

Margin Call - About the 2008 economic collapse. It was serviceable but not nearly as good as The Big Short

Hide and Seek - Holy shit...the twist is the biggest clusterfuck in history. I felt insulted after watching it. How on Earth did they think having De Niro be the imaginary friend/killer was a good idea?

Margin Call is a gem. A lot of (semi) big names in that flick and they all deliver. I'd watch it for Jeremy Iron's character alone.

Scarface
I remember first time I watched this, it was on all the gangster flick lists when I started getting into movies. Thought then it was good but no Godfather or Goodfellas. But it actually is. Very different than those. De Palma's use of color is second to none except George Lucas. Visually this movie is extremely sexy. Music he's as good as Scorsese. Acting is top notch across the board, just fantastic. Some BIG players in this movie. Of course Al, Pfeiffer but also massive presence of Robert Loggia and F Murray Abraham himself. But what this movie really offers is the message. For all the poignancy and performance of "Look how they massacred my boy" the main message to take from that is "don't get into organized crime". Scarface hits deeper. The dinner scene at the end with Montana, Manny and Elvira is REAL like none of those other gangster movies are. It's bits and pieces like that telling you De Palma can be a notch above all those other big directors.

A Good Year
Underrated feel good effort from Ridley. His visuals coupled with the backdrop of the French countryside produces the desired results. Russel Crowe still at the top of his game here, a joy to watch. A nice simple script with some good and funny scenes. Should have watched this years ago.

All the Money in the World - A movie about the John Paul Getty kidnapping. I liked it although it was a bit too long. Mark Wahlberg was pretty good in this. I think he's better when he isn't the main star in a movie.

A Teacher - I had high hopes for this after recently watching Notes on a Scandal. It was disappointing. It moves really slow, very little happens until the last 20-30 minutes, and the ending sucked. Looks like they turned this into a series on Hulu. I might check it out.

Escape Room - It sucked but had potential. The cast was so unlikeable that I barely made it to the end.

Amelia - Snoozefest. It feels like its only reason to exist is to give Swank a third Oscar. Didn't happen of course. It's just covers the basics of her story and you don't really root for her to achieve anything. I was wanting it to hurry up and get to the last flight.

A Kevin Costner double feature....

Draft Day - Kinda like the movie Moneyball but about the NFL Draft instead of MLB. I liked it. This was the first Costner movie I've watched from the 21st century. I'm gonna dig more into his later career.

I wish the movie could have also included the coming season. You really root for him to make the right decisions and there's not much payoff as it wraps up.

For Love of the Game - This was decent but it had so much more potential. I like the idea of flashbacks as he's in the middle of pitching a no hitter. He does a great job playing the over the hill athlete staring down the barrel of retirement.

The way his relationship with Kelly Preston plays out brings it down a few notches. To make matters worse, and I could sense it coming when she stays at the airport to watch the game, they wrap it up all nice and neat. It wasn't necessary.

A perfect ending would've been the scene where he's sitting on the bed in his hotel room crying after the game knowing his career is over and so is the relationship.

Hardcore is fantastic. 8mm is basically Hardcore, but they made George C. Scott Peter Boyle's PI character. The 8mm script is great, though. It was ruined by Joel Schumacher.

Pretty Woman -  This actually wasn't as bad as I expected. I had forgot Laura San Giacomo was in this. Is the story ridiculous? Yes. I actually found the part where he grows a heart and doesn't destroy the company more unrealistic than falling in love with a hooker.

Watching this now makes it seem like its only reason to exist was the need for a huge movie to catapult Julia Roberts to superstardom.

I laughed when I remembered how some people back then wanted a sequel to this. Where in the fuck would the story go?

Mermaids - A sweet little movie. This would've sucked without Winona Ryder. She carries it. While I liked it, it feels incomplete....like something is missing. I also don't like the perfect ending.

One of these days I should read the book.

Here Before - First new movie I've watched this year. It's really good but the twist ruined it.  It goes off the rails the last 20 minutes.

Quick Change -  It was like watching a new movie. I was shocked that the bank robbery is over in the first 20 minutes. In my memory, most of it took place in the bank and then the escape.

The Pelican Brief - Damn this movie is looong. Major pacing issues and it needed around 30 minutes cut.

It's ok but the conspiracy truly requires the suspension of disbelief. She's a college girl who created an interesting theory. That's it. Was she right? Yes....but if the FBI, CIA, and the president/staff would simply ignore it, it's so irrelevant that nobody knows it exists! By targeting her and those around her for assassination, it does the opposite...it puts a giant spotlight on the brief.

Reality Bites - As I get older, I sympathize more with Stiller's character. It was obvious when walking into their lives that it was an ironclad clique and he was on the outside looking in. It never would've worked.

Another thing I notice as I get older is how truly manipulative Winona really is here. She has both guys wrapped around her finger and is basically just using Stiller.

I also think that their final meeting at the club should've been handled better.

I loved Quick Change.

Great cast.
