He's not retiring.
Last week Jason Newstead let it out of the bag that Alex Van Halen is putting together a new Van Halen to tour....it would've been Alex, Roth, Newstead, and Joe Satriani.
Before it could be completely laughed off as a joke or cry for attention, Satriani confirmed it.
I won't be supporting it if it really happens.

He made it sound like he was dying. Are we sure it’s not Sammy?
He must have went into remission and wants one final ride with Van Halen...same with Alex.
If it was Sammy....the bass slot would not be open. He has stated several times that Anthony has to be involved for him to do it. Those two are stuck together like glue.

The whole idea already crashed and burned. He wouldn't name names but it's obviously Roth's ego that led to the whole thing blowing up...or their reaction to it anyways.
He also shit on Newstead for announcing it early.
It was a bad idea from the start.
