This night was never topped vocally imo.

One of the best performances from the band period but especially Axl is magical here:

Listening to those 80s clips it becomes apparent how much his voice deteriorated in the late 80s before collapsing on the 91 tour. 92 we hear a reborn Axl with more control of his voice but with a cleaner rasp which eventually turned into Mickey Mouse after his late 90s surgery. In the 2000s he has been focusing on his falsetto but I remember a notable exception on Nightrain in Tokyo in 09 or 10. Anybody still have the video?

Yeah Axl's voice was never the same from 91 - on compared to the 80s. Farm Aid Civil War is really good, Limelight 88 is very good, it has my fav Don't Cry. Bucharest 2010 is also very good. I think early 88 was peak Axl, his rasp never sounded better than in this performance IMO

The Nightrain you are talking about is from 09, I forgot if it is Tokyo or Osaka, but it is deleted off of Youtube. I also do enjoy 91-2010 a good deal too however.

I think part of what makes classic GN'R unique is that not only do you have one of the most talented singers and frontmen of all time but he is also straining his voice beyond the max to the point of ruining it for good. Combined with the other talent in the band and the volatile personalites, you got a truly explosive band bursting with energy and creativity. Late 80s GN'R is a once in a lifetime happening.

1986 Don't Cry (Acoustic) at The Central. The 2nd half of that performance features some of the best live vocals ever. Unbelievably good.

Quite confident Axl’s voice immediately set them above the rest in the eyes of record companies. He was very unique. axl92

Axl's voice has always been the most interesting for me. There was a YouTube channel just with videos about his voice, where you could see his characteristics over time. There was even a video comparing the differences between him singing standing and singing sitting (when he was angry or with a broken foot). I thought this channel might go down someday. In fact, it fell. But I downloaded all the videos before. Because they are very good compilations.

Below is a video of the 1986 Don't Cry (Acoustic) performance I mentioned earlier. His vocals in the 2nd half of this are incredible. I find it amazing that the crowd has no idea who these guys are, and 5 years later the song is in the Top 10 on the pop charts. 35 years later, the official music video has almost 650 million views.

Yes I believe so. The original version was taken by a fan on his phone I think and it sounded even rawer with the low quality.

I don't know who's playing here but I think it's the best instrumental part in the CD vault. Quick Song clip.

Slash could go wild with that riff and the soloing.
