I see your point, James, in that none of the individual albums were transcendent, smash sensations that would propel them into the Zeitgeist.
I say this as a non-fan but it almost makes their success more impressive.
It really does.
Any 'singles' band will usually flame out fairly quickly.
The Stones never did. They've had a few duds of course but they always came back swinging.
What's their most famous song?
Start Me Up.
It was accidental.
When it was time to go in and record Tattoo You, the band had nothing. They decided to go through their old rejects and create an album out of that.
Start Me Up came out of this.
Amazing songs like Jumping Jack Flash were strictly singles...never appeared on an album.
Look at their comeback album Steel Wheels. Sold about 3 million but isn't known as a great album.
It's known for its singles which were in constant rotation on radio and MTV.

Only a hardcore Stones fan could name a deep cut from that album....or any Stones album for that matter. Unlike other iconic bands like Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, etc, their deep cuts never made it to radio.

I’m thinking Satisfaction is their most well known single.

When Start Me Up kicks in, everyone from Eskimos to Tatars to lost tribes in the Amazon know what it is.
That wouldn't be the case with Satisfaction.

Yeah....some weird choices when it comes to releases back in those days.
I still can't believe this wasn't on an actual album....

Unbelievable.
Imagine how many fans bought the white album, saw it on the tracklist, get home, and they're pissed it's the slow version.
Then you have to go back out and hope that the single is still in stock.

The groove on Under My Thumb is pretty amazing ... Ruby Tuesday is also classic...ur right...too many
The 3 disk greatest hits says it all really...they needed a 3rd disk so that anything released after the 70s could be included

You'd definitely need a box set for a proper hits package....and they have enough killer deep cuts to fill another disc.
I just checked my windows player....I have 87 Stones songs although that does include the full Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge albums. So a bit of filler included there.

Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane released as singles and were not on Sgt Pepper’s....Hey Jude was not on the White Album....Jumpin Jack Flash was not on Beggars Banquet and Honky Tonk Women was not on Let It Bleed.
All top shelf songs and singles.
