Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
From bloody disgusting:
I have some bad new for you this evening, so sit down and get a shot ready. Dimension Films announced today that the remake of Hellraiser, which is being written and directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (Inside), has been bumped to a undetermined 2009 release date. The film was slated for release this September. In addition, MGM has pushed the release of Eli Roth's Trailer Trash out of its August date and also into an undetermined 2009 release. We're assuming it's because of the strike, and we'll keep you posted when a new date arrives for both films. Click the titles above for more details.
It's time to give the Weinstein brothers some props... I've always felt that there was a lack of heart and a lack of caring about the development of films over at Dimension. Obviously making money is their number one priority, but it's nice to hear that they're not just trying to push out product without cleaning it thoroughly. I received a call this morning in response to our news that Dimension had delayed the release of their Hellraiser remake until 2009. Apparently they weren't 100% happy with Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's screenplay and have decided to take the film to other writers - so we're now back at square one. The French duo are still attached to helm the pic, which is great news for anyone who has seen Inside, one of my all-time favorite horror films. But like I said, it's nice to see the Weinsteins concerned about the quality of our beloved franchise. Mucho props! Until 2009...
So Dimension has basically rejected the script that Barker approved of. Not good news at all.

Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
Yeah I thought Barker was doing it because he didn't want anybody else doing it.
Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
After deciding to rewrite the screenplay, Dimension Films has announced a new date for their remake of Hellraiser, which will be helmed by those incredible French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury.
Pinhead will once again grace the big screens on January 9, 2009 - mark your calendars.
Plot concerns the tale of a man and wife who move into an old house and discover a hideous creature - the man's half-brother, who is also the woman's former lover - hiding upstairs. Having lost his earthly body to a trio of S&M demons, the Cenobites, he is brought back into existence by a drop of blood on the floor. He soon forces his former mistress to bring him his necessary human sacrifices to complete his body... but the Cenobites won't be happy about this.

Sounds like a shot for shot remake with nothing new added. They might as well just save money and rerelease the original in theaters.
I wont be watching this. Seriously. I'm not going to reward film makers that wont even attempt to be creative.

Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
That's what I'm saying and having the biggest problem with Nightmare on Elm Street as well.
They didn't mention if Doug Bradley was going to be pinhead again. You'd have to use Bradley, if he isn't on board this project, they might as well give it up. Who is gonna say these lines like Doug Bradely
The box. You opened it. We came.
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.
We have such sights to show you!
Hellraiser was and still is one of my favorite horror movies and I'll always say for it's time, the makeup was phenomenal. To use CE's if they go that route now to simulate the skinned Frank would probably suck next to the original that was all special effects make up and was perfect.
Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
Revelations is a worthy Clive Barker news outlet, and has been tracking this project since its initial announcement. While the release date is currently up in the air (some folks holding onto 09/05/08, whereas others claim it'll be 01/09/09), there's no doubt the Hellraiser franchise, while finally receiving some legit development time and money, is currently tossed back and forth between various screenwriters and the Weinstein bros., while everybody's waiting for the whizkid who'll figure out the Lament Configuration.
In October '06, Barker came aboard to pen the script. Judging by his further comments, he spent the end of the year focusing on other things and started working on it only after The New Year.
"The Hellraiser treatment has been signed off on by Miramax. They have in their hands and they like it" - Barker, 03/26/07
That wasn't a script, more of an outline as to what film would be.
"We are actually writing the script right now and we don't want to remake exactly the Clive Barker movie. We have met Clive and told him what we want to do with Hellraiser and he said, 'It's fucking good do it!' We are happy to have his benediction. It will not be a remake. It will still be called Hellraiser and it will have a new Pinhead." - Alex Bustillo, 10/11/07
Bustillo and Maury were French filmmakers riding the Haute Tension-like hype of their local genre offering, Inside (À l'intérieur). At this point, Barker's treatment is out. Whether he ever fleshed it out to a screenplay is unknown, but he magnanimously promises to supervise the project.
"I will watch over two Frenchmen who will remake it and only because I think they are two very splendid young men who made a fucking great movie. [...] I think it's all the more reason that they remake it; that they don't take my version of the story. I had some specific suggestions, which I don't want to spoil for you or anyone else, about how things might be taken up a notch or two. [...] My commitment to being involved was really based on these guys who had a bloody good idea that had nothing to do with what I had in my head." - Barker, 11/07/07
Of course, by press time the Writers' Guild had began their strike and Hellraiser bit the bullet. I'd imagine Bustillo and Maury had joined WGA upon signing a deal with Dimension and thus, had their freshman project stopped dead in its tracks. Welcome to Hollywood!
A week after the strike is finalized, new writers are announced. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who wrote the original horror movie Feast, have already churned two in-production sequels, along with the already released Saw IV and the inevitable Saw V. So I guess it's inevitable they'd be taking a stab at Hellraiser at this point. Their recent track record has shown a notably fast pace, and Dimension seems to want a produceable script rather soon, apparently from someone that'll arguably understand the semantics of an American audience better than Barker or the French.
Doug Bradley remains on the sidelines, and has learned about this project the same way as the rest of us. His best bet to be involved was when Barker had a hands-on approach. Now, the casting of Pinhead'll be anyone's guess.
Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's departure from Dimension's Hellraiser redux has left head honcho Bob Weinstein in one helluva predicatment. He's got a release date marked (January 9, 2009) and a script (by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton), but no one to guide Pinhead back into theaters.
No tears please...
There are rumblings of a new director being courted for the remake. You may know him: Mr. Darren Lynn Bousman. Insiders tell ShockTillYouDrop.com that an offer is out to the director of Saw II, III and IV. Bousman is already slated to direct Scanners for Dimension, but with so many bogeymen finding success through franchise restarts (Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Hellraiser might take priority for the Cronenberg redo.
Shock contacted Bousman when we first heard of this news a few weeks back. The director simply replied with a, "No Hellraiser." However, we've been told that answer may have changed recently.
It may pan out, it may not - we're awaiting confirmation or denial.
Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
It's all shit news. The only person suited to remaking Clive Barker is Barker himself. Bousman's Repo! better pan out for him, because so far he's offered nothing as an original talent for me to have any faith in a project he might find himself attached to. What's he done besides franchise sequels and remakes of other works? And please, for the love of god, don't attempt to remake Cronenberg. And if you do attempt to remake Cronenberg, do it with someone of his caliber, not this guy.

Re: Hellraiser remake (2009)
From what I've heard about the Scarlet Gospels they should just wait and turn that into a film. Harry D'Amour (who's one of my favorite Barker characters) and Pinhead in the same story is going to be killer, not to mention Harry has to go to Hell to find him.
