I'd also like to add that blaming the left for marching leftward while we currently sit as far right as we've ever stood in American politics is a peculiar assessment.

Do you think?

Do you not think Trumps presidency is a symptom of the mainstream left having already headed too far left more most people?

No...because I think the entire political spectrum falls between far right and center in this country....socialism is sprinkled in there but we can't use that word in this country so we call it capitalism funded social programs.

You'd have to point to something specific if you want more response.

Around 17% of the budget is spent on the military.  People linking sources without citations, and ignoring facts that can be verified with a quick google search are part of the problem.  They think they're informed, repeat falsehoods, and never acknowledge they were wrong, let alone try to improve.  This is why we can't have meaningful dialogue, when people are allowed to repeat absolute falsehoods.

The defense budget passed in late 2019 was for 686 billion.  The budget was for 3.8 Trillion.  You can do the math your self.

This is one source...

Maybe I need to understand better what 'Discretionary Spending' is...either way...it's clear who these budgets favor.

Here's another chart supporting my point...

Those who think we are too far left but have no problem with this need to check themselves. We don't have money for Obamacare? We don't have money for schools? We don't have money for police pensions? But we have endless money for nearly a dozen conflicts in the world.

If we really were 'too far left' this isn't how we'd be spending our money.

The war in Iraq is an abysmal failure and it goes on and on. No end in sight. No objective.

I have seen no ostensible benefit to this for me or anyone that I know. Some war profiteers are really living it up though.

Creating arguments, because your original failed.  Same song, same dance.  What was military spending under Obama?  Clinton?

Even the China budget is ridiculous when such poverty exists there.

Listen, I'd be thrilled to stay out of most of the international conflicts that we get into, so I'm certainly not an advocate of any of this.  But the reality is we are the free world's police force whether we like it or not.  That's why many of those countries don't spend like we do.  If we didn't, they'd have no choice but to spend more.

People globally may view us negatively, but we get the first call from anyone facing issues they don't know how to solve regardless of what that issue is.  You cannot expect us to bail countries out when they are in trouble then expect us to walk away allowing whatever it was to happen again.  We're going to protect our interests.  You can't have one without the other.  Not the way things are now or have been since WWI.  Regardless of why we were in the Middle East, just leaving wasn't an option.  Obama wanted to do it and knew he couldn't.  If we're going to be everybody's big brother, there's a cost that goes along with it.

It falls back to this idealistic thing people that lean socialist always throw out there without any basis in reality.  It would be great if all these things were possible - no war, everybody is rich, everything is clean energy, all services for everyone are free; but there's a reason they aren't and there's a reason socialism fails.  Reality sucks, but we can't ignore it.
