I'm listening. We should call this "Raid Axl 51"

Hey, I've been saying this since at least 2011. Just get a bunch of shitty fake tattoos, a pork pie hat, and bring a guitar to butcher anything you play, and Axl might think you're just Ashba coming to visit from a distance.

First time online in a long time. Surprised to see the gnr world with leaks underway.

My laptop took a shit and I'm online with my phone. Won't be able to download them for a few days but I listened to each track once.

My thoughts:

CD

THIS is how it was supposed to be. Period. As most of you know, the title track is my favorite. On my bucket list was hearing the original version.

It's phenomenal. It finally gets to breathe and be the tight little rocker it was supposed to be. The album version is a bloated wannabe epic it never should've aspired to.

Prostitute

This song still does nothing for me. Im not sure how to describe it. To me it just doesn't work on any level.

Riad

Once again, THIS is what the album was supposed to be.

IRS

I always thought the old 99 irs was mediocre compared to the later version. Maybe because it's higher quality, not sure, but it somehow works here and fits in perfectly with these other tracks.

The Blues

Again, this is how it should've stayed. There was always a damn good song underneath the overcooked syrup on the album.

Going Down

Said it before, I'll say it again. This isn't a gnr song. It's a Tommy solo song that somehow wound up in the CD sessions. It could've been the 14 Years on a 2000-01 album.

CITR

amazing. Could've easily been a sleeper hit from the 2000 album

Hard School

A nice average rocker that could've easily been a b side to the title track. When Axl talked about 10  b sides in 2002, I guarantee this is one of the songs he meant.

Axl has been vindicated. When he said  it was ready to launch in 2000-01, he wasn't lying.

Would the album have set the world on fire in 2000? No. However, it would've got good reviews and probably sold 1 or 2 million copies. Then they could've moved on from there.

I remember Brain saying it's there Led Zeppelin II. No it isn't. It's their Load and probably would've been treated the same...

Initial shock, couple decent singles, and a good tour backing it would've kept the album chugging along until round 2.

Chinese Democracy never deserved it's fate.

2 things.

1. I agree it's a great stuff. Not epic, but great, or really good. Not saying it's White Album or AFD, but it would've sold well, and been fairly positively received. Think back to the era as well, 99-2000. It was post grunge, where I don't think even original Guns might've pulled off a decent release from 93-95, the music industry changed. Maybe they could've fit as a quasi AIC-Metallica mix & fanbase.  Anyway, 99-00 was alot of Korn, Limp Bizkit type Drop D tuning chords, Creed was still big, and one hit wonders cover bands. People would have accepted this nuGuns, most would've liked the music, and given Axl credit for pulling it off, albeit some hate him for destroying the original band. Ashame tho, cause it would've created a great rivalry for VR & maybe challenged them to create some better epics, expecially on their followup album, but it didn't seem to have that motivation.

2. I think Axl's partially nuts. Like obsessive compulsive, couldn't put out these songs until they were tweaked over & over again, loved tinkering with the smallest of issues, and probably would fall into & out of his creative groove and walk away doing nothing for months at a time. Not lazy, just like someone trying to write a book not wanting to force it, rather waiting until inspiration hits to begin writing again.

There's definitely proof that Axl is OCD about recording, going all the way back to the recording of AFD and recording each song line-by-line. Then there's how long he kicked around November Rain trying to get it perfect.

However, I fully believe that the obsession with Chinese was all brought on by Iovine and Ezrin shooting him down. With him by all accounts being like a beaten dog prior to the recording of it, then finally mustering up the courage to start writing, forming his vision, and recording it - basically rebuilding his confidence from the ground up. Then to just have it all shattered again in one fell swoop by being told it's all shit, and he should pretty much give up. And Bucket leaves. And VR blows up.

So he has to keep tinkering. He has to get it perfect. He NEEDS to prove these songs are good. They're worth it. And shit just kept going around in circles. Axl probably wanted to bury it after 2006 came and went. UMG didn't give a shit and wanted their reunion and to recoup the money they sank into it. So, we got what we got.

That's also why I don't think we'll hear any legitimate news on new music until it's literally about to come out, if it does happen. I can't even say I blame Axl for it, after the amount of pressure that the whole saga incurred on him.

Good point, although I think a label would've released an album similar to this around 99-04, so I think we might be selling record companies a bit short by blaming them so much. Axl was never going to be Bizkit or Korn, but CITR, The Blues, Hardschool even CD are decent enough songs & have good rythym & melodies, maybe ballads weren't much of a thing 99 but they would've been recognized as good. I recall him not being so good live though, and probably had some issues mentally at the time as well with putting himself out there again. Still, why didn't he play some of these on the 2002 tour?  Even the 06-10 years wasn't it mostly old UYI & AFD covers with 3 CD songs?

I do agree he had some bad timing, by 99 Guns seemed forever ago. BH leaving, VR starting etc, then 06 CD essentially leaked anyway & was done/near-done.  Then ultimately 08. Possibly he chose not to agree to a followup 09-10 release but imho he should've put out a double album to solidify it & give his post AFD legitimacy instead of the Ashba years shit.

He did play The Blues live during the '02 tour, along with Chinese, Riad, Silkworms, and Maddy. In '06, TWAT was played once, The Blues stayed in the set, along with CD and Maddy, and Better and IRS were added.

2010 was pretty much the most frequently that the majority of Chinese was in the set. Everything except Riad found their way into the setlists.

2002 Axl live was weird. He had almost zero rasp, but his clean voice was much stronger than now, so while it didn't really sound like... well, Axl... he wasn't terrible.

Couldn't agree more with this analysis. The 99 version of these tracks were ready and didnt need anymore tweaking. I adore buckethead and his contributions are certainly memorable but, this album was ready in 99. Oh and that ominous Beaven intro to CD...fuck yeah. 9

I'm really surprised Going Down was from 99.
Is there a way to know which songs would have made it to the 99 album?

Also, is Madagascar 99 any different from the 2001 version?

While I'd have to go through CD Whispers to be sure, I don't think there was a finalized tracklist at that time.

I'm not. 99% of the material dates back to the early years of the project.

Forgot Chinese Whisperes existed. Gotta give that another read.

The only reason I think it was recorded 99 was because all the songs that leaked were from 99. It also has that, for the lack of a better word, aesthetic as the other songs

We finally got to hear the version of CD that was on that 2002 Boston radio ad.

Long time coming. 9

I'd love to "rebook" 1999/2000 for GNR.

Scrap OMG on End of Days

Month after Axl's MTV appearance mentioning CD and after Live Era's promotion ends, the title track is released as a single. Geffen pushes it to the Moon with the emphasis on the new lineup. Have Stinson pound the pavement as he was well known and respected. Get Finck out there too as people know him from NIN.

The Woodstock 99 rumor turns to fact and they headline

Release another single (IRS or CITR) and have the album's release follow that.

Start touring small HOB type venues to reintroduce the new band to the music world.

After a break, finish the rest of the tracks.

If CD is their Load, CD 2 is their Reload.

Edit:

One thing you've got to remember...

CD had very little baggage at that point. The world basically had a neutral stance on the project. It was not a pop culture joke. It would not have been difficult to promote it.
