Fucks sake. It's Izzy fuckin Stralin you're talking about here. You don't talk that way about Keef or George Harrison do you?!

He isn't Keith Richards or George Harrison.

He quit the band years ago and has never done a successful tour since then.

Why the fuck would you pay him a shit ton of money to maybe show up?

And no one is kissing Richard Fortus' ass. The fact is Fortus, is reliable. He gets the job fucking done. Light years ahead guitar wise too. Maybe not songwriting.

Izzy is a flaky. Great songwriter. But, fucking flaky.

So let's lay off the Richard Fortus attacks.

Dude is also stand up, too.

Keith Richards once said, "You never quit the band." Izzy not only quit the band, he even quit the actual legal partnership behind the scenes. It freed him up to ride dirtbikes in the middle of nowhere instead of dealing with all of the legal bullshit the other 3 did over the last 25 years, but it also meant that he gave up a ton of leverage for this reunion situation.

Re: Izzy tweet about Axl and Duff interview

Its this simple: the deal doesn't work for either side.

GnR just had a very successful stadium tour of the US without Izzy's involvement.     Therefore, Axl/Slash/Duff had no reason to offer Izzy any substantial amount of money, as his involvement adds little to nothing to the bottom line.

Izzy felt he deserved a bigger piece of the pie.   Its his right to feel that way.      I don't blame him for it.     He is holding out for what he feels he is worth.

Let me be clear, I love Izzy.   I would love to see him involved.    But it doesn't make sense for either side at this point .   That may change in the future, but Izzy going public like that isn't going to help his case.    Perhaps seeing that they can sell stadiums without him will bring him back down to earth in the future.     I'm sure it sucks for him.

I look at it like this:

If you are Izzy. You co-founded the band and you co-wrote some of the most successful songs that the band has relied on for 30 years. Then the guys you created the band with offer you a gig where they want to redo the songs of the past again, and have you there to add to the legitimacy of doing that. They've been offered and will make millions and millions of dollars each. They'll give you just a few thousand. You tell them no thanks.

If you are Slash, Axl, Duff. You have been offered tens of millions of dollars for a handful of nights work. The money is contingent on you 3 showing up but it doesn't matter to the offer who else comes. If you cut in Izzy you get a little bit more street-cred with the hardest of hardcore fans, but essentially, the end of the war between Axl and Slash will take precedence amongst almost all concert goers and for the media. Having Izzy there as an equal will literally cost you millions of dollars each - for no reason other than impressing hardcores - who you long ago realised will always find something else they don't like. So you will lose millions to have him there and what will you gain? You will once again be working with a person who is notorious for bailing on projects before they are completed. Just like he did with GNR, VR, some of his solo bands, the hall of fame, and basically almost everything he's been known to get involved in. So you're taking on that risk yet costing yourself literally millions of dollars to have that new problem. No thanks.

So it's not in either party's interest to reunite. Other than for Friendship. But let's face it - this band stopped being about that many many years ago when Adler was fired if not even earlier.

Izzy gave up his rights the day he handed in his resignation papers and left the legal partnership. Dude strikes me as bit delusional with entitlement issues.

Better than most of Izzy`s albums.

monkeychow wrote:

The other problem for Izzy is that if there's no songwriting going on - but just performing old songs - there's not a lot to differentiate one rhythm player from another in the way the songs sound.

Slash is an identifiable lead guitarist. You hear his solo and you can tell when it's him playing. Axl is an identifiable lead singer, you hear his voice and you know it's him. These are the things that make a GNR song identifiable as a GNR song on the radio and not some other hard rock act.

Fundamentally, swap out the singer or the lead guitar and a GNR song will sound like a cover version, but swap out the rhythm player and good luck finding anyone who could tell in a blind audio test.

Something like Sweet Child of Mine has simple chords of D, C, G and so on....it sounds like that whether Izzy plays them, or Gilby plays them, or Richard plays them, or if they invited in Eric Clapton to do it. The rhythm part simply does not allow for a lot of distinctive performance style to shine through.

Worse than that - to the very limited extent that it does - IE that a player can voice a simple chord in a more complex way - or the rhythm guy will do an occasional lead break to trade off with Slash - then Izzy doesn't have the best chops for it. Bottom line - Izzy wrote the songs in the song book, but if you're just playing songs from the book - then no one can even tell who is playing and if they could - they will hear fortus play it better than the guy who wrote it. Sad but true.

So Izzy has limited barging power as there's basically no audible difference if he's there or not until they decide to write something new.

Didn't read the whole thread but Izzy has a legitimate reason from a music making perspective to want an equal split. He was featured on all of the bands important albums and contributed to their sound.

That being said, from a money making perspective for the band... Izzy should know he's not as well known as the other 3...

Like some people on the first page mentioned... it's the music business, not the friendship business... what can you do but be happy at least 3 and a half of them are together.

You think it was that they approached him for guest spots (ie Steven) and he wanted the full time gig, or that he wanted the split Slash and Duff were getting for the guest spot? This isn't the first time this issue came up. Back in 06 he said something that he had vsome hurt feelings because Izzy demanded a bunch of money for his guest spots...

Sounds like he didn't even counter the offer of $40,000 for the 4 shows... I bet if he said "I need $80,000 and will bust ass to nail the songs and give it my all" they would agree.

The profit split right now is Axl 50% and Duff and Slash is 25% and this after all expenses are paid etc. Axl alone is not paying for Frank and Melissa... Their costs are factored in then the remaining profit is divided. But Slash and Duff are also get a cut on all that merch, much of which is Slash designs anyway. We all like Izzy, but no way he was going to bust ass like Slash and Duff to learn CD songs and give it his all. He should have done it like Adler and saw the big picture. Forever Adler will have been known to be involved and Izzy will be the cry baby.

So is that how Duff got this reunion back on track? He basically teamed up with Axl and secured himself an inflated value. And no wonder Axl is smiling so much if he's taking home 50% after expenses. Nice "friends" Slash has there.
