Re: Better - Studio Version of 2016 Live Arrangement(fan mix)
" And now I don't know why
She wouldn't say goodbye
But then it seems that I
Had seen it in her eyes"
Nursery rhyme shite. I`m sorry but it blows chunks. Nothing wrong with one or two uptempo ballads once in a while but This I Shit is beyond bad but hey, you have to hand it to Axl he has balls to perform this turd at every gig.

That's just the 80's buddy. Plenty of shit to go 'round.
I haven't even gotten started on part of the 90's and the 2000's when Jon wanted to turn BJ into a country band.
Now he basically tours the band as housewife porn, performing Train-level songs.
Michael Bolton is more of a bad ass than Jon Bon Jovi

I'm amazed Jon can even go out of the house with his head held up. Richard Marx points and laughs at him and remarks, "what a fuckin' pussy"
Granted, this isn't me attacking Jon or the band Bon Jovi. It really isn't.
But This I Love + Robin, let alone Slash, crushes the majority of their catalog.

To me TIL isn't Nursery Rhyme stylistically so much as influenced by Showtunes or Broadway type music. I don't mind it, however, firstly because it's still in a rock setting, and a lot of GNR has hints of other music styles added, and secondly because I enjoy those types of songs occasionally in general.
The tune is so beautiful I think it's one of Axl's best ballads, and the lyrics I find so tragic it really makes me feel for him.
Then Slash has now taken that to the next level like he does to Axl's songs. Just like NR and Estranged in terms of the addition to me.
Have a listen to this version. It's fucking amazing.

I agree. I actually think completely the opposite to Ragnar. I think it's one of his deepest, emotional, and most mature sets of lyrics he's ever penned.
I always saw it as Axl doing something straight up --- A Freddie Mercury piano ballad. I could totally see Freddie doing This I Love, along side Love of My Life or Friends Will Be Friends or In My Defence.
Re: Better - Studio Version of 2016 Live Arrangement(fan mix)
OK, OK, I exaggerated a bit Axl, even at his fucked up phase, > > > > > Bon Jovi but yeah, as I said, I can`t stand TIL. Granted, I dislike most of Axl`s ballads but TIL grates on my nerves more than November Rain or Estranged.
I expected more from Axl and frankly, I was disappointed. It`s clear he was depressed and suffered from writers block which is understandable so much shite went down back then, his band imploded in front of his eyes, his private life was fucked up, lawsuits and litigations left and right. All those things stiffled his creativity. Shame.

Like I always said: Izzy wanted to be Keith Richards, Duff was a Seattle punk/proto-grunger, Adler wanted to be a good-time Van Halen rocker, Slash wanted to be Joe Perry. And Axl wanted to be Freddie Mercury or Elton John.
Put all that together and you get AFD. UYI is where Axl's starting to take more control, so you end up with more Queen-style piano balladry and studio tinkering. And Chinese Democracy is all Axl; it's basically the Queen album that never was. Madagascar's samples/solo is an attempt to do a latterday version of Bohemian Rhapsody's studio innovations. This I Love is a straight-up Mercury piano ballad (the "I'll never say goodbyYYYYEEEEEeeeeEEEE" line could've been lifted directly from one of Freddie's compositions). TWAT is classic OTT Queen ("Throw an orchestra on it, darling."). Even the "Ay-oh" stuff from Scraped is straight out of Queen's live shows:
Re: Better - Studio Version of 2016 Live Arrangement(fan mix)
I like "This I Love" but I'm not in love with Axl's vocal take. I would've preferred that both that and "Madagascar" were sung straight up with no theatrics or rasp.
I get the "why" for both of those decisions but just think that they're both majestic beauties and deserve that subtle touch. That's why I love the "Catcher" demo. Everything about it is just so subtle and sublime and effortless.
And even if you don't like "This I Love" lyrically or vocally, listen to it instrumentally. It's really beautiful.
Then again, it's not 3 power chords, so I guess it's bad. Fuckin' pussy that Axl. Feelings and existential dread and shit is the stuff of squares.
