Re: The NHL 2007-08 Season Thread

Let's go Sabres and let's go Blackhawks!! Need wins from both. Then tomorrow, need Montreal and Carolina to win. Although if Carolina lost tonight and tomorrow that could work too- with Washington taking the division spot.

Anyways, win Sabres win! Going to the Friday game vs. Toronto. Should be good.

Last night was crazy... Habs almost blew a 7-1 lead.  Nonetheless, they're now the only team clinched in the East and have a 3 point cushion over Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh has a game in hand) ad a 7 point lead over Ottawa.  I just hope if Montreal stays in 1st, Boston stays 8th.

Re: The NHL 2007-08 Season Thread

With Connolly gone for the season, Miller playing less than average, and a depleted defense, it's gonna take a lot of luck for Buffalo to pull this out. But I'll be watching to see fi they do. And go Leafs and Carolina!

I really don't think Boston is good enough for the playoffs. I'd much rather see Washington in that spot, I even think Buf and Fla might be better than Boston. If the Bruins do get in, the 1st place team had a free pass to round 2.

Report: Bruins' Savard has broken back
Marc Savard

The Sports Network

3/26/2008 7:33:06 PM

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Bruins leading scorer Marc Savard suffered a broken bone in his back after being cross-checked by Canadiens forward Steve Begin in Boston 3-2 loss Saturday in Montreal.

According to the Boston Herald, the cracked bone is called a transverse process, one that protrudes from a vertebra and serves to attach muscles and ligaments. Savard sat out Tuesday's 6-2 win at Toronto, and will miss at least one more game with the injury.

In 74 games this year, Savard has posted 15 goals and 63 assists for a team- best 78 points.

The Bruins have a tenuous hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Washington.

wow that sucks...still though the bruins keep winning...toronto is fucked for sure now 17 if they woulda won these 2 games they would be one point out of the playoffs....but in true leafs fashion they blew both games

Re: The NHL 2007-08 Season Thread

Buffalo's done. They'd need so much help making it in, and they don't play too well.

Reasons the Sabres weren't a playoff team this year (in no particular order)..

1) Injuries - Yeah every team deals with them. But Numminen wa sout all year, and in late season Connolly, Kalinan, Spacek were lost. Defense couldn't handle it. Offense was stretched at times with Hecht, Staffor, and Ryan all missing time since the All-Star Break.

2) Losing Campbell - I still support the trade, but losing Campbell was losing the only star-powered "captain" on the team and with injuries the defense was in major trouble. Bernier did jack shit to help the team.

3) Lack of captain - The rotating captaincy is a cute idea, but it doesn't work with such a yound team. Hecht and Campbell could handle the 'C', int he future Roy and Connolly could, but the team took huge losing streaks when guys like Spacek were the captain. And Pominville as a captain for the late season push to the playoffs? What a joke.

4) Mismanaging Goalies - Miller can be an all-star shut down goalie, but 30 consecutive starts and he becomes very average. Thibault was underused and is very capable. Lindy always overworks the starter, sadly. Had Miller been rested, he could've been the extra push in March to get into 7th or 8th. But he was and is tired and stressed.

5) Shootouts - The worst shootout in the NHL caused the Sabres a lot of problems. LAst year they were one of the best, but this year they were awful. A .500 shootout would've given them 4 or 5 more points, and taken points from teams like Boston and Philly. Miller was bad int he shootout this year. Also, it was the difference between a win and a loss, contributing to losing streaks and beating moral down.

I don't know about next year. This team is good, young, but fragile. For the first time in a decade, their minor league players aren't good enough to play. Hopefully free agents and the pick from Campbell's trade will get a more solid foundation in the coming years. We'll see.

I'm excited for the playoffs either way.
