Re: New Elvis Presley film in the works by Baz Luhrmann
By Jon Blistein | May 1, 2014
Baz Luhrmann is in negotiations to direct a forthcoming Elvis Presley biopic being written by Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks), The Wrap reports.
Watch Elvis Presley Sing 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' in 1972
Warner Bros., who are behind the project, had no official comment, though the studio and producers have been in talks with Luhrmann for several weeks now. Sweetening the deal, Warner Bros. has reportedly scored the rights to the King of Rock and Roll's massive catalogue of music.
Details about the movie, however, are scarce. Marcel's script is completely original and not based on any pre-existing material, so it's unclear what part of Presley's life the movie would focus on. (As far as casting goes, might we suggest Jack White, who already portrayed the King in the biopic parody Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.)
Following the massive success of Luhrmann's last movie, The Great Gatsby — not to mention his extravagant directorial style that relies heavily on music — it's not surprising he's being courted for a film about Presley. Still, the director has his hands in several pots right now: He's supposedly in talks to direct an adaptation of the 1970s martial arts Western TV show Kung Fu, while simultaneously developing a miniseries on Napoleon for HBO.

Wow. I'm actually excited about this, Baz is a great director.
(if a mod could turn "fim" into "film" I'd appreciate it. Writing on an iPad keyboard ain't easy)

Baz Luhrmann is probably the best pick for a film like this. His style is very musical, and his visuals could be very interesting for the time period.
But who plays Elvis? The project will live and die on that performance.

It'll be awful, worst of all it'll be gay (not meant in a homophobic kind of manner).
Luhrmann's take on things tends to be completely over the top and not serious, bordering on parody. I'm getting shivers right now thinking about when I had to write an essay on his Romeo + Juliet,

If they focus on Elvis' late years Kilmer would still be perfect.
That could actually be hilarious.
I'm real curious how those Viva Las Vegas scenes would end up with Baz. Gatsby was really cool, even if a bit hollow. If you haven't seen Saving Mr. Banks btw, about the author of Mary Poppins battle with Walt Disney while making the film, go check it out. I never expected it to be as good as it was and it also had a lot of heart. I'm interested to see how Baz works her material.

Yeah, but why would that be wrong for an Elvis movie? His story is over the top, which is why I like the match.

Re: New Elvis Presley film in the works by Baz Luhrmann
I really don't like Baz as a director. I don't mind his visual style; but the way he directs his actors and adapts a story is extremely messy and unfocused. This is like the third or fourth film that he has promised to be working on. He left a couple ones particularly the Bioshock movie which wouldn't have worked as a movie or with him behind the camera to begin with. I really enjoyed Saving Mr. Banks. Thought it well produced, lots of talent given a ton to work with (especially Thompson and Hanks), and the story extremely humorous and heart felt to boot. I'm open to an Elvis bio pic that covers the whole spectrum though. There are going to have to find the right guy. A diamond in the rough.

I understand the feelings, but how many times has Elvis's story been told in a traditional way? I think it could be really cool to see a really different take on this story. We'd basically get John Carpenters version otherwise, we already got that. I'm open to something different.
