This is actually a far more interesting question then the discussion that resulted. People forget that Chinese is ALL about Stephanie, and if not all, pretty close. This had a huge impact on Axl, and also the reason he basically gained his "reclusive" legend that resulted in the 90s.
I think Stephanie's fucked up relationship with her kids says it all about where she was at back in the day when Axl claimed she was a drughead having coke parties around Dylan.
I think had Axl's dream actually came to fruition, that in fact he would've abandoned the GN'R ship even quicker when the going got tough. Maybe even by 1992, he would've just walked at the height of their popularity. The dude was entirely unstable. His dream was this broad, and if things had been dreamy at home, Axl would've had utterly no reason to walk out the door. He had something to prove, and had proved it. What he wanted was his dream.
GN'R would've been effectively dead right then. The better question is had it happened BEFORE the contract re-negotiation, and Axl had no secured the rights to the name, would GN'R had continued on with a different singer? Perish the thought. Despite all of the Slashites thinking Slash works with such talented people, his choice of vocalists are utterly HORRIBLE. GN'R would've been an absolute embarassment with Eric Singer on lead. Would Izzy have returned?

Interesting thoughts. Perhaps Axl was ready to settle down and do the whole family thing with Stephanie. It seems like he has always craved some type of normal and loving family structure that clearly he seemed to be lacking growing up.
Maybe in the back of his mind he thought he had found the one with Stephanie and was mentally preparing to throw his energies into that phase of life in the early 90's. Walk away at the top or at least let the band take a back seat whilst he focused on family and a relationship. But Steph apparently still seemed to be partying and fucking around, combine that with some beatings and kitty litter shitting and it all fell apart. So Axl carried on with the only thing he knew - the band. But the whole saga seemed to send him into a spiral, the band drifted apart as the UYI tour wore on and eventually fell apart. He also completely missed the boat with the whole traditional family thing both with Steph as well as any future potential bride. Instead he allowed another lecherous surrogate family to fill the void and the rest is history.
Probably a shame that he never had kids. Whilst he may make a shit husband or boyfriend I get the feeling he would have made a good dad. Perhaps having children might have given him some much needed perspective on stuff too and another motivation and purpose. As a father myself I certainly have to say it's changed the way I think about some things and changed my priorities and focus.

I think his relationship with Dylan says it all. This kid was calling him daddy, which is very common for children that age when their actual father is away, and Axl was bonded to the two of them. My background is Psychology, and even when I was younger I viewed things with that eye. I remember seeing their behavior with each other on Making the Fucking Videos. I think the November Rain video was closer to the reality in his head than one realized. Estranged was probably written for Erin, and by the time the video came out it was about Steph, like pretty much all the ballads on Chinese.
He took that mother fucker hard, and many people around him at the time said he completely shut down her birthday, and had continued to try to make contact with her with no avail. She married an ugly billionaire, and Beta said she was an opportunist (the fact Beta chose Axl, who wasn't her employer at the time said it all imo).
Obviously I don't know shit, but to me on the outside looking in, Axl could give a shit about the business. He wanted the success, and the life, and that normalcy that he never got when he was young. He blew it with Erin, but he wasn't going to make the same mistake with Steph. Except Steph was an money-hungry coke whore, who was a whole headcase in and of herself. Dysfunction + Crazy = Nuclear.
I don't think Axl was hung up on losing Steph, he was hung up on the loss of the dream. I think it's affected him to this day. With that kind of power, and that kind of love of a vision, I think Axl would've totally fucking bolted from all the insanity had Stephanie been willing to make babies with him and make a home in Malibu (the fucking house was FOR THEM).
Now a normal artist, like Slash, Axl knowing he could go home to a beautiful wife and family at the end of the day, might've grinded the rough edges off of him and he would've had a more loving personality, especially in dealing with Slash and all the sharks with GN'R. The problem with that is that Axl was NOT a normal artist. That tension, that anger, that loss, all of those emotions have been what has FUELED Axl as an artist his whole career.
Most of the rest of GN'R were the same. Guns N' Roses as an entity, always was marked by that. In the end as i've said before, whether Stephanie or someone else, Old GN'R might've had one more, and still does, one more album in them talking about the fight and eventual success and happiness they found as the end of the trilogy of their lives (Appetite, UYI, Part III). This is a band that wrote from tension and strife. They were never, in ANY alternate dimension, going to sit down and write songs for the sake of songs, and who would want them to? Look at Aerosmith.

Yeah it's kind of a shame when you see the pics and vids of him with Dylan. They genuinely seems connected, or at least Axl seemed to make a real effort with him.
I read where it was suggested once that when they broke up she had told Dylan that Axl had abandoned them. Yet she took out a restraining order against Axl when she left so there was no way he could even have any contact with Dylan even if he wanted to. Plus I recall in an interview post the release of Chi Dem where Axl said words to the effect that he wants Dylan to listen the album in order that he can know the whole truth about the relationship between Stephanie and him.
I have to also think the way Steph rushed into the marriage and family thing with Peter Brant must have really hurt Axl. Axl & Steph broke up in February 1993 when he accused her of cheating (with Peter Brant Sr. ), she and Axl had only been engaged for a few weeks at the time of the cheating. Stephanie’s second child (son Peter Jr), was born in December 1993. Fuck me she didn't waste any time! She basically gave Brant instantly what it appeared Axl wanted so desperately. One might suggest the gold digger saw dollar signs then opened up her legs to make sure she she secured her financial future ASAP.
But when it's all said and done I'm sure most of us have been burnt by a relationship at some time. You just gotta take it on the chin as best you can and move on. Fuck me if I was Axl I certainly wouldn't have given Steph the pleasure of continually allowing what she did to eat away at me for years. I refuse to let anyone have that sort of power over me.

I also refuse to let women, or anything else have that kind of power over me. But unlike Axl, I don't have the money or power (or at least not right now, will soon though, don't you worry 'bout 'ol JR; when i'm down, the only place for me to go... is back up).
Anyways, I would've probably took the Charlie Sheen-route, which is why I fucking love Sheen and think the guy is a fucking legend. This guy will let NO overlord control his decision making, and now he's got enough money to buy Axl AND Slash from all these backdoor deals with Two and a Half Men's syndication bread (which is massive), plus all the pre-sold dough he's already got in the bank from Anger Management, PLUS a crisp $25 million out the door he got from WB for getting pre-maturely fired, PLUS he got to keep his share in the Ashton Kutcher episodes of the series.
Why do I say all this? Sheen has more money than he's ever had in his life. We don't know what Axl's investments are, on top of his royalty money, plus that $20 million dollar license he got.
Money = Power. Power = Control. Had Steph dumped me in the way that she did, i'd of blackmailed the fuckin' hell out of her, and took that boy right out of her arms. Little ruthless, but then back in the day (and still now), Axl has had no trouble scoring supermodels. Whether it be supermodels, or fucking porn stars, i'd of been getting after it on legendary levels after she dumped me, and the best revenge he could've ever had was doing something like marry Scarlette Johansson when she was looking for a daddy after her breakup with Ryan Reynolds. I don't know how far that went, but what epicness that would've been.
Steph may have her old billionaire, but Axl would've had his money, badassery, and married to the "Sexist Woman Alive" that's nearly half his age. Axl ran into privacy to lick his wounds, I would've did that AFTER I embarrassed her ass. Take Miranda Kerr or Bar Rafaeli or one of them young bitches to poundtown.
